The fuel system is primed by the fuel pump. At the same time, when the key is turned, the PCM (power train controll module...aka computer) also shoots a spray of fuel at the intial start. This all happens from input signals from the CKP,CPS,MAP sensors, and is a programmed calculation within the PCM.

Thanks for your fast answer. What is the most likely cause of the loss of this prime injection?

  • GetMeOttaHere Jul 10, 2010

Maybe not a total loss, but insufficeint fuel pressure is where I would start.

  • Richard Jul 10, 2010

I just checked fuel pressure. It came up very slowley to 52 Lbs. Is this a filter problem ? The pump had no trouble holding this pressure after it reached it.

    thanks for your help, Richard

  • GetMeOttaHere Jul 10, 2010

The cheapest and easiest thing to do at this point is to replace the filter and recheck the fuel pressure. If the condition still exists, the pump may be on the way out. Also check the pressure with the engine running and make sure it is steady around 60 psi.

Car has been sitting up and will not start now. It seems to not be getting gas and I do not know how to prime a fuel injection system. Any help appreciated.

There is only a few cars fitted with an ancient petrol injection system that needed any priming.

Diesel engines mostly need the injection system priming but petrol injection systems do not.

Lots of cars use a system where the fuel pump runs for a couple of seconds when the ignition is switched on and that is all the time it takes to prime the fuel system. After a couple of seconds the fuel pump switches off and waits to restart when the engine is cranked.

As priming the system takes only a couple of seconds some manufacturers don't bother with the brief priming run of the pump and just have the pump start when cranking.

Could be faulty supply, fuse, pump relay or the pump itself.
If the car is fitted with an immobiliser, perhaps that is the problem.

Will a 2002 Pontiac 3100 interchange with a 2000 Buick 3800?

Not really.
The 3100 is a Chevy 2.8 and the 3800 is a Buick engine.
Most everything is different including exhaust manifolds, engine brackets, and wiring.

In the morning the truck wont start unless you prime it with starting fluid, after that it starts all day until the next morning why?

Inside the fuel pump is a check valve to keep static fuel pressure in the fuel lines . When they go bad they allow the fuel to drain back into the tank . This can cause the problem your having. An it would also depend on the make ,model an year vehicle you have . The GM vortec engine with CPI fuel injection system ,if the fuel pump is weak you can have the same problem .

I got a load squeal/whistle engine area.

If you removed the belt/s up front and have the noise. The only thing moving is the crank shaft. The noise is bad main or rod bearings. Time for a rebuild or new engine.

Do my 1996 gmc box van engine fuel injection or carburetor

Look.
If you see a fuel rail or a short-throat throttle body, it is fuel injected.
If you see a carburetor... well, I think you get the point :)
From the year (unless it is a non-U.S. model), it is most likely FUEL INJECTED.

2000 Buick Century air filter

GM hasn't used any wing nuts on their air filter in cars since they switched to fuel injection. It's either going to be several clips or screws holding the air box together. Follow the air duct from throtle body towards air box. It's normally on drivers side. Should be a flat box with the air duct coming out of it.
