There is probably a rubber seal on the end of the injector. A new one is probably on a half dollar. You should have removed the engine position sensor plug first, so there would be no ignition.

A blinking service engine light indicates an engine miss. Take your car into any/most parts house and they will use a code reader/scanner to see which code number is being set and then identify your engine cylinder that is not functioning properly. Once you identify the cylinder you can start to check different systems, spark plug, wires, injectors, ect. to find your problem and fix the miss.

most misses are injector related either from dirty injectors , low fuel pressure ow injector wiring faults
use a quality injector cleaner for a tank or two
run the fault codes to check for other related sensor problems

Wiring diagram for the ecm plugs

Im idling at the light in my 2000 Dakota R/T and all of a sudden my check engine light comes on and the engine develops a miss and starts to smoke. Diag code says misfire in #5 cyl and there is a rich raw fuel smell from exhaust. I have 175K trouble free miles and have checked compression which reveals worn but good piston rings.I replaced head gaskets and of course still exists. When I got a hand to crank while I checked voltage at each injector, #5 showed higher than the rest at all times without dropping to zero, so i'm replacing the ECM which controls signals to injectors. Oh yeah I replaced #5 injector before voltage check to no avail. Tell me if you think Im on the right track replacing ECM.

Miss in engine. DB2 codes indicated miss in

you may have a stuck injector (if your engine has an injector for each cylinder) ... if you place a stethoscope (or just a stick) on each injector you can hear them click as the engine runs .. if the one on cylinder 2 is stuck then it will stop clicking .. you can use some injector cleaner in your gas but the injector has to start working a little before it can do much good .. so if it works sometimes and not others then that might be worth a try .. if you cant get it working (wont click) then often you can pulse it into operation by very briefly touching 12volt across its coil .. if you keep the 12 volts on for too long it will damage the injector coil .. if you have only one injector then thats not your trouble ..
the cleaner usualy does the trick if you can get it to operate even for a short time .. you can also replace the injector if you determine that its bad ..

You are mis fireing on cyl 1 and 3 if you replaced plugs and wires and coil this is going to be a fuel injector issue or valve issue. See if you can swap the injectors with known good cyl. and see if it changes. Or have a shop do a fuel injector service on it to see if it helps. It may be to late for the fuel injector service.

Fuel isnt coming out hte injectors

ok when you turn the key on, you hear the buzzing sound in the tank? if you spray starting fluid into air intake, will the engine fire? there should be a fuel pressure port under hood on fuel rail i believe. if this is vortec style engine, injector assy under intake is possible. somewhat common. pull oil dipstick and smell for fuel. that would indicate maybe the pressure regulator has let go. ck for spark as well, just to be sure youre on the right track.
