Question about 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis
Code 34 means you are not getting any egr flow. find your egr valve and check to see if vacume hose is attached, if so follow the hose to the egr solenoid which should have that hose and a direct vac hose going to it. and an electrical connector. make sure all of these things are in place and not disconected or broken. the most likely cause is either a broken vacume hose or a clogged intake manifold.
