First, congratulations on owning what was considered one of the worst vehicles ever to come off the assembly line - I personally think you are in possession of an extremely classic vehicle. Please don't pry on the hood. Go up under the front of the car and reach up until you feel the hood latch mechanism, you should be able to trip the hood latch mechanism with your hand or a pair of pliers. Once the hood trips you should be able to open it normally. Good luck on finding a replacement cable.

Thanks. I tried that today with no luck but that's because it is somewhat restrictive to get a hand up there as the primary latch mechanism is a bit recessed given the Edsel grill design. Tomorrow's another day - will give it a shot.

Sorry it didn't work, have you considered cutting the latch cable so maybe you can pull it down enough to pop the hood? I am not sure this will work but like a friend of mine said 'you can't use it like it is'. And, I do admire and appreciate the Edsel automobile. Good luck.

I hear the latch cable retract when I pull it. I beleive for some reason either the mechanism is not retracting enough under the hood or perhaps the pin is slightly bent off angle. I got a rod up in the pin hole and felt I was pushing the latch back. Always better in the daylight.

This is true. Don't be surprised if you walk out in the morning and it unlatches. Or you have a brainstorm and get up at 3 am and go open the hood. It happens.

2010 Chevrolet 2500 Extended Van can't get hood open. Inside latch flips open, but still can't raise hood.

Have someone press down on the hood with their palms while you try and release it, if it does open lube the hood latch with white lithium grease AKA "Lubriplate".

How do I open hood when cable or latch is broken

If the plastic hood release handle inside is broken, can you reach the steel cable, if so, use a pair of vice grips to grab the cable and pull. Sometimes it helps to have a helper standing at the end of the hood and pop the hood with palm of hand, in the area of under hood release mechanism, at the same time your pulling the cable.

If cable is broken, some makes and models, you can remove front grille and get at under hood release mechanism.

There is usually a primary hood release, inside vehicle, and a secondary release under the hood, you have to slide your hand under the hood to release, sometimes you have to press down on the hood a little to move release. Trying to shut the hood with secondary release engaged can be difficult, you don't have the distance and the weight of hood to swing down.

Pulling on the hood release cable does not release the hood

It may be necessary to access the hood latch from underneath the vehicle to get it to release. Once this is done, the entire latch mechanism and release cable will have to be examined and repaired or you will be in the same predicament again.

Honda civic hood latch

The metal loop on the hood is probably misaligned from the latch at the bottom. The loop should have a couple of bolts to loosen and adjust.

2008 Mitsubishi release cable for Hood not working. When pulling on release inside car, the hood does not pop open to reach under and release the safety latch

I have a similar problem on my 2006 VW Passat.

I'm able to open the hood two ways:
1) ask someone to hold onto the lever inside the car while you try to lift the hood to the point where you can use the unlatch button and open the hood fully.

2) Pull the lever completely open in the car and try to find a thick screwdriver or some thick paper folded up to wedge next to the lever to hold it open while you get out and try to lift the hood to the point where you can use the unlatch button and open the hood completely.

Other than this finding a service manual or tutorial online about how to pull out whatever trim or interior covers you would need to replace the cable fully. There should be a specific replacement guide for this item since I'm sure it happens to car's at least semi-regularly

Hood release cable level inside of car works but wont release hood . how i get it to release to get hood to pop . so i can open hood

Have someone press down on the hood while you pull the cable. Most likely the latch is just sticking and needs a good shot of penetrating oil(WD40).May even try having them bump the hood while hold the latch.Good luck!

Hood latch not releasing...cable is do i open

I would suggest trying the following.
1 I would spray WD40 into the area where the latch mechanism is for the Hood. Then I would go inside and pull the hood release a few times. Then I would repeat the procedure.
2 If that didn't work I would have someone inside the car pull the release cable and hold it in the pulled position while I PUSHED DOWN on the hood then PULL UP HARD, IF POSSIBLE. Sometimes the hood will sort of unsnap.
3 If that didn't work, I would pull very hard on the release. While someone pushed down on the hood.
Usually you have success by this step. When you have success getting it open. DON'T CLOSE IT.
1 Lubricate is with grease and free up the mechanism so that it purrs like a kitten.
There should be some sort of adjustment you can make to center the latch mechanism so the Hood mates without any sort of offset that can create tension on the mechanism and cause you to use profanity profusely regarding the illegitimate birth of the engineer who designed this latch.
Happy New Year,

Hood release on 95 S-10 inoperable

Have one person pull the hood release inside cab while the other person pushes down on front center of hood.  One might have to push down a few times before it releases.  This only works for stretched cable not broken cable.

Hood release cable is broken

Is there any part of the cable inside the cabin that you can pull with a pair of pliers? I suggest that you try that. You may need to disassemble it from the pull handle to make that work.
