Wipe off the lid and check it again. I have been working on cars for over 3 decades and have never heard of such a thing. Catalytic Converters use platinum coated ceramic pellets to convert nasty combustion byproducts into less nasty products. The exhaust from the engine comes in one end and goes out the other end toward the muffler. The extremely high temperatures involved would burn off any oil, and introducing any would actually increase the amount of emissions rather than reduce them, which would be entirely pointless. Read the last paragraph of the attached article.

The text may be worn off? I have an 01 new beetle and mine says, " Engine Oil Caution: overfilling can damage catalytic converter" I may have the wording wrong but its close- and it is located on the top of the engine.

What does code PO431 mean on 03 Kia XL. My check engine light is on. Auto zone said I needed to replace Catalytic Converter(s). Does anyone know how many Catalytic Converters are on it?

code p 0431 refers to warm up catalytic converter, bank 2--efficiency below threshold === causes ---cat converter---wiring---HO2S sensor 2
it should be a v6 engine as it has 2 banks , bank 2 is the one closest to the grill.
there should be 2 cat converters ( one for each bank)
from the suggested causes , I suspect that the HO2S sensor is not performing properly and is not providing the correct mixture to the cat converter to make it operate properly
if you bump the cat converter with the hand and it rattles , it will need replacing and autozone would be right
However I am always of the opinion that you should seek other advice from an accredited exhaust specialist shop and get a quote as cat converters are not cheap

This question is in the forum - mechanic didn't know what it is. My car, same thing, oil cap on reservoir says catalytic converter oil. If I look inside.....nothing. What is this thing?

No such thing as an oil level for a catalytic converter! What make, model, year vehicle is it? Can you post a picture of it?

It's my Subaru impreza wagon with an oil leak n when I drive it 50 mph or more n then park after I see fog (smokes)coming from the catalytic cover

Have the engine pressure washed then change the oil and install dye that glows under a UV light, then put the car on the lift and look for oil leaks after you drive it about 25 miles. Yes this is best left to a shop as the light is about $100.00 and the dye about $5.00. You can do the pressure wash top and bottom of engine at the car wash

OIL LEAK

Catalytic converters do not have oil in them. If they do, there is a SERIOUS engine problem. You simply have to LOOK for the source of the leak. Oil ALWAYS runs downhill and back towards the rear of the vehicle, due to gravity and vehicle movement. So start at the top and work your way down.

That code deals with the catalytic converter. You might need to replace it or to fix another problem. Let me ask you, is it using a lot of oil? Or, is there oil in your antifreeze or a foamy look to your oil? If so, you may have internal engine damage that is causing the increased emmissions and is, in turn, causing the check engine light. If not, you may need a new catalytic converter.

Also, is this the only code, or is there another code that indicates engine misfires? If so, it is possible that these damaged the catalytic converter and will need to be fixed along with the cat.

I have taken the oil pan bolts out and there is not enough clearance to remove the pan on a 2002 Buick Regal 3800 to replace the gasket. What steps do you suggest next.

Did you remove the catalytic converter, and motor mount? Lots of stuff has to come off to get this pan out. :o(

3.8L Engine
  1. Drain the engine oil.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

Negative battery cable Throttle body air inlet duct Engine mount struts Accessory drive belt
  3. Install an engine support fixture.

Catalytic converter from the right exhaust manifold Right front wheel Right side splash shield Oil filter and discard A/C compressor bracket and reposition the compressor Power steering oil cooler pipe brackets from the frame Engine mount bracket bolts Lower engine mount nuts Torque converter cover Oil level sensor electrical connector Oil level sensor
  4. Raise the vehicle and place a support under the frame.

Right side frame bolts and loosen the left side bolts Engine mount and bracket Oil pan

P0422 general evap failure i tested gas cap and it failed replaced gas cap and repaired a vac hose to the purge soilniod light comes back on within 10 min of clearing it

P0422 Buick - Catalyst below threshold.

Catalytic converter is clogged or out of medium.

Replace it.

ACTUAL DIAGNOSTIC:

Fault Code Definition
Code P0422 indicates that the Bank 1 Main Catalytic Converter's emissions efficiency has fallen below the minimum allowable limit. This threshold is tracked by a Catalyst Monitoring Oxygen Sensor located on or near the outlet of the Catalytic Converter.

Symptoms

* Check Engine Light will illuminate
* In many cases, no abnormal symptoms may be noticed

Common Problems That Trigger the P0422 Code

* Defective Catalytic Converter
* Engine misfires have damaged the Catalytic Converter
* Internal engine damage resulting in high oil consumption and/or a leaking Head gasket has damaged the Catalytic Converter

Common Misdiagnoses

* Oxygen Sensors are replaced when the real problem is a damaged Catalyst
* Catalyst is replaced when the real problem is internal engine damage, which is producing elevated emissions levels
* Catalyst is replaced when a misfiring engine is the real problem

2002 altima burns oil about a quart every 300 miles. I Just got this car engine is very clean . I had oil changed and they talked me into haveing an oil flush ran through the engine with the oil change....

Check your muffler, is it thick black? The engine is burning oil, you need new engine if the cylinder ring is bad (compression test), and new catalytic converter that poisoned by excessive oil.

Many altima 02 has pre-catalytic converter failure that cover under 8 years/80k miles emission law. The materials in the pre-cat destroy the engine. It is well known problem and you can get new engine under this warranty

Looking for a picture of the engine of a 1996 ford probe

no, if the oil pressure is eratic the first thing i would check is the oil pump. unless lots of black smoke is coming out the tail pipe. in that case your engine seals are bad and you will have to do a compleate rebuild on the engine.
