The latch is not articulating right perhaps because it is not adjusted correctly. You might need to loosen the bolts and readjust, or take it to a body shop that can make it work for you.
The brake light going out is an electrical problem. Probably just a coincidence that this happened, short of getting into a rear end collision.
Replace the light bulb in the lense for that one to fix the light up problem.
