Question about 1998 Mercury Mystique

1 Answer

Battery is drained by an internal short even with the key turned off on a 98 Mercury Mystique. No fuses are blown. With the battery fully charged it takes about 30 hours to drain the battery. Can a small internal short in the starter or alternator cause this?

Yes, it is very possible that a small internal short in the starter or alternator can cause this. Sometimes the starter wires can lightly touch and cause it to lose a charge. There are a number of things that can short and cause a battery to die over an extended period time. You should probably consult a specialist because it can be difficult to track down.

240z battery drain

Have you confirmed by going out to the car at night that none of the interior lights or lighted visor lights truck or hood lights are staying on? That is by far the most common cause of a battery drain. Other less common cause is a defective alternator rectifier diode Disconnect the battery overnight as well to confirm you don't have a shorted battery cell, that to will run the battery down, it is called an internal drain. Also make sure the top of the battery is clean of any acid.

Battery drains in about a day while car is not on, not battry, not alternator, mechanic says both are good. traced drain to fuse panel junction fuse but not sure how that helps

disconnect one fuse every night with a fully charge battery until you have a fully charged battery the next morning or take it to a repair shop

So i have a Mercury CApris 91, i just replaced the alternator and battery and the battery still will not keep charge the charge will last about 1 day and then day ..and the only way to start it up is...

If you replaced both the alternator and battery and the car starts, if even only for a day, then it has to be the wiring from the alternator to the battery. Thats the only other thing I can think of. Check that or just replace the line and let me know how it goes.

How do remove a 60 amp (ABS,heater blower) fuse from a fuse box in a 98 mercury mustique?

This fuse is bolted in. Remove the battery and then pull the tab that I'm pointing to below, sideways, and pull the fuse block up.
You'll be able to remove the bolts holding the fuse in and install a new fuse. I have to warn you, there has to be a really bad short to blow a fuse of this size. I strongly suggest you find the short before you replace this fuse.

My 2000 mercury Mystique wont start when i turn the key in the ignition is just clicks what could it be alternator starter or battery?

first check battery voltage. should be 12 volts or a little over. IF the battery is low then charge battery and then load test battery. If you remove you battery and take it to local parts store most will check for you. if battery load test good but was low on voltage then I would check to see that alternator is charging while engine is running. should be charging aprox 13.9 volts. if battery had full voltage and load tested good then most likely the starter is bad.

1. There is a wiring connection that is draining the battery.

2. The alternator needs to be checked.

Cheers.
