In Calif the "smog test only" place I went to said it failed the first time, they let it sit and cool down (I'd been driving it some earlier), and it passed. Apparently a cooler engine helps.

OK.
not ready?
O2 sensors can become contaminated instantaneously after being replaced if you have an antifreeze leak or oil leak into your cylinders.

Or, if there is a leak in the exhaust system upstream, this can cause the o2 sensors to sense too much oxygen and give out of specification readings, even though, they would be good in a sealed exhaust system or a car without an antifreeze or oil leak into the exhaust.

How are the fluid levels behaving in your car? (i.e. coolant and oil).

Antifreeze and oil levels are good exhaust system is sound can't hardly hear car run when standing next to it.

OK, if the fluid levels are alright and its running quiet and no backfiring and so forth, but you simply get a code, maybe you should run it as is.

That would be the cheapest, assuming you get good fuel economy.

    Good luck on it.

The only problem is that it won't pass inspection that way.

Will an engine bought from a 1999 Silverado originally sold outside of California pass California emissions

There are two type of emission classes.

Federal and California emissions.

Look under the hood for the emission class sticker.
Smog check station's machine in CA are programmed to handle both types.

You do not need to change anything before the inspection.

==== Side notes: You should check the service record for the last Catalytic converter,O2 sensors and EGR valve change.
Service interval for
Catalytic ~180,000 miles O2 ~150,000 miles EGR ~160,000 miles

If you can locate the last smog test (even from out of state) Check for the
CO NOx

You need to replace your O2 sensor, that should clear pretty fast-does it switch slowly (talking about the upstream O2 sensor)?

-as to the evap, on some cars they won't test unless the tank is between 1/4 and 3/4 full for an extended period of time, but you might just need a gas cap.

My service engine light came on and when tested it came up as the heated oxegen sensor.. how important, and what time frame do i have before it is critical?

the heater just gets the oxygen sensor working as soon as possible, the quicker it works, the quicker it controls the engine, so it affects emissions and mileage. You can put it off, but it needs to be fixed.

97 ford f150 will not pass inspection

If you have a component problem (plug missfires, run rich, bad O2 sensors, etc.) the "check engine light" should have come on in the dash. Its possible that warning light is burned out.

You need to get a free scan from Autozone or Oreillys or a similar autoparts place. There may be problems a scanner can pick up or the source of all your problem is the onboard computer which is not lighting up the "Check Engine Light". Either way, a scan will let you at least know the computer is working.

If you have a V-8 with the Aluminum intake, there is a groove under the Airhorn gasket that gets sooted up. 8 bolts and a $10 gasket fixes it when you clean it. Also check the plumbing from the "Backpressure pipe", it goes from Exhaust to EGR pipes at back of engine. This can give burnt sulfur smell on accelleration if there are holes in it.

In some states you get a print out of the test and when they fail the mechanic at least will give you an estimate to fix the problem. There is also a liquid sold at Autoparts places to help your vehicle pass the test. It is a gas additive. Then since oil vapors are drawn into the engine to burn, clean semisynthetic oil will have less contaminants. Do an oil change and new Air filter before testing.

I hope these suggestions are helpful.

Can't pass state inspection, changed EGR valve already, next?

I suggest quit hunting for maybes and rent an OBD code reader which ends up being free when you return it to the auto parts store. Connect it and find out what is causing the CEL condition. Normal issues are the O2 sensor, or sensors in the system.

I have a 2001 Santa Fe and the Engine light is lit and has been for many years. When I took the vehicle for the State Inspection I was told that the Co2 needed to be changed so the light would come off and...

The best thing to do is go to Auto Zone and get your Hyundai scanned for a DTC code. That would tell us which O2 sensor has gone bad. You have three O2 sensors and one of them has gone bad, the O2 sensor sends signals to the ecm to control the air fuel mixture so it will not run to rich or to lean which is causing you to fail the state inspection. Good luck and keep me posted on what the DTC codes are, be glad to help.

You can go to any autoparts chain store and have them try but if it is not corrected or corrected itself in 3 start cycles, it will come back on.
