Question about 1997 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

2 Answers

My '97 chevy s-10 won't start what started out as an intermittant problem has become the norm. when i turn the key, it will turn over, but not start. then you see that none of the normal lights on the dash are on that should be as the computer checks the system. the door open bell sounds. the power gets to the radio. after playing around with putting the key in and out, slowly turning, or whatever else i can think of, it will finally work. i always know before turning the key all the way if it going to start or not... no dash lights... any idea what or why this is happening?

Sounds like the ignition switch is bad. Not the lock cylinder, the electrical switch.

You could be looking at a Fuel issue, Electrical issue or Timing Belt issue. To eliminate the Timing Belt, remove the Distributor cap and turn the motor over, if the rotor inside turns your ok, if it doesn't you have a broken timing belt. If you eliminate the timing belt as the problem, Loosen (Do not remove) the fuel line that connects to the carburator and crank the motor, if fuel comes out it is most likely not the problem. If fuel doesn't come out then you have a clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump. If you have eliminated Fuel and Timing Belt then you need to get the Haynes repair manual for the vehicle so you can start trouble shooting the Electrical system. Make sure you have checked your Fuses and don't have any blown fuses.

Won't start how ? no crank - no start , which means when you turn the key to the start position nothing happens , starter doesn't engage. Or the starter turns the engine an it doesn't start an run. a crank - no start ?

1999 CHEVY LUNINA WON'T START BATTERY AND

Check the dash once you turn the key to the run position the passlock runs a security check using a set resistance value through the chip in the key. If the security light begins to flash the reading it received was incorrect or it didn't get a reading at all. You can try reseting the value it is looking for by turning the key to start then releasing it. After 10 minutes turn it off then cycle it start again leaving it in on for 10 minutes then back to off then one more time. After the third cycle has completed for a total of 30 minutes. You should be able to turn the key on and start the vehicle. If the light continues to flash their is a problem with the chip in the key or the connections within the ignition its self. Both are common but a Pass Lock Relearn as described above will usually adapt to the poor connection values. Hope this helps.

My malkbu classic won't start. The guy at the grage says its a key sensor. I believe I had this replaced around 2 years ago. Did I miss a recall, or how do I get info regarding a recall?

call the chevy dealership, and ask them if there has been any recalls in the past for your malibu. good-day! or if no good response, ask for the chevy recall center!

1997 chevy cavalier 2.2 engine, intermittent starting problem. Replaced plugs, wires, coil packs. Sometimes it will start and run like a champ. Other times you can't get ut to start at all. I've...

When you say it won't start, do you mean it cranks but won't fire, or it just won't crank? If it just won't crank, you could be having an issue with the starter relay. The often become intermittent before failure. Many owners do not know there is a starter relay because it was added as a recall item i order to protect the iginition switch from burnout. The starter relay is located in the very front of the engine compartment, just to the left of the battery, on the back side of the radiator crossmember.

all gm vehicles from 97-2005 have a theft system called the passlock system. (how to deactivate system on chevy malibu) turn key on engine off, let it stay on for at least 10 minutes, then turn ignition off, take out key from ignition switch. after 1 minute start the car. you can also go to tubesound.com to disable system for good. --tubesound.com/passlocksystem. ( just type in the problem when page comes up ). have a good day!! vehicle will not start with system blinking. it thinks its being stolen.

Wiring Diagram 1998 Chevy S-10 starter replacement

The starter has one large cable from the battery positive, and a wire that goes to the solenoid (Part of the starter) that becomes hot when the key ignition is turned to start. This also passes through the neutral safety switch. (So it wont start in gear) Not sure if this is what you need, a little vague.
