Question about 1998 Ford F150 Regular Cab
Are you getting a sweet-smelling and white exhaust too? What you describe is due to a failed head gasket. Coolant is leaking into the cylinders and causing the bad idle (coolant isn't combustable).
Take it to a shop to get a compression check on your cylinders - you'll see one or two of them much lower than the others. Replace the head gasket and you'll be set.

Testimonial: "Thanks very much. I figured that the coolant loss was due to a head gasket but didn't think about it causing the bad idle. Any idea on an estimate for repair cost? THANKS"
