Question about 1989 Dodge Ramcharger

1 Answer

I have a 1989 Dodge Ramcharger 318 Rear End

I have a 1989 Dodge Ramcharger 318, 2-wheel drive, w/12 bolt rear end, stock. I have the pumpkin drained and open, the axles out and the drive shaft off. I cannot, no matter what I try, remove the the rear end gears from the pumpkin. I cannot discern anything blocking the free slide-out of the entire rear end gear assembly. Is there another step I need to take to remove this gearbox? In other vehicles, at this point, the whole thing just slides out with nearly no effort. Thanks!

The thing is, I/We can't find said adjusters. Is the adjuster the large threaded "pipe" piece that the bearings slide down in between? These pieces I see are on the outside of both bearings, flush to their outer faces. If we are talking about the same pieces, how on earth do you adjust them? If not, where are they. Thanks for the help!!!

WOW dude! Once I explained this issue to my cohorts in this repair, your information was PIVOTAL csmock132, in getting this done. We also found a well-pitted race after successfully removing the gearbox. Thanks sooooo much csmock132 for your help! I'd repost in testimonials, but I can't get the site to work with me!

Did you turn the bearing adjusters on the ends? They are held still with little bolts.

I believe you mean the small, inward-turned tabs on the brackets that hold the bearings in. That entire bracket (with the adjustable tabs) comes off to allow the entire gearbox to slide out. I forgot to mention that that clamp had already been removed. So, in answer, no. The outside edge of the bearing rests flush on a threaded piece that goes into the entire rear end housing (this is inside the bracket area). It is there that we think there is a piece or something that is impeding our attempts to get that gearbox out of the pumpkin.

I forgot that the tabs are bolted to the bearing caps. But now that you have bearing caps off, have to turned the adjusters. You have to loosen the adjusters. The adjusters are torqued down to adjust bearing preload.

You should be able to turn the adjuster with a punch or screwdriver and a hammer.

Doesn't the little brackets that hold the adjusters go thru a hole in the bearing cap? Put the bearing caps back on loose, and remove the little brackets. Is there a hole in the cap that you can pry the adjuster loose? You won't have to turn the adjuster too far to get the carrier out. Plus with the bearing caps back in, the carrier won't fall out when you turn the adjuster.

Glad you got it. Did you get it back together and get it adjusted?

Trying to replace rear wheel bearings in 1989 dodge pickup and cannot disassemble to remove axles... can you offer any help?

Sorry i have no practical experiance of this american vehicle but if the back axle is the same as a astro van then i have done one and as its the same car plant then i would suspect its the same.well on the astro van i done i had to remove the back diff cover then take out a small bolt to remove the shaft that holds the planet gears then take them out and only then can you get to horseshoe clips on the end of the halfshafts to remove them ,then the half shafts will come out.these grooves on the end of the half shafts that hold the clips wear allowing the wheel to move in and out and this i suspect is your problem,What i done in this case as the vehicle wouldnt pass the annual mechanical inspection we have here in all europeon states ,sorry countries-- I made some spacers up to take up the play in the grooves and this worked for a year or so before it went again .

How do i change the gear oil in the rear end diff on a 85 chevy c20 3/4 ton and how many quarts will i need also it has a 14 bolt diff cover.

A stock 14 bolt rear end hold about 3 quarts. To drain the differential you will have to pull the rear cover. I jack up one end of the axzle and let drain for a while and then the other end for a while. This assures you get as much of the old fluid out as possible. After the case is drained replace the rear cover with a new gasket(I usually just use permatex ultra blue silicone). Refill the case through the fill plug located on the side of the pumpkin. Fill until the fluid starts to come back at you through the hole. Be sure to check if you have a posi or limited slip differential because you will need to add an additive to make either of these work properly. Make sure to add the additive before you top off the fluid so you don't overfill the case. I generally drive 50-100 miles and then recheck the level to make sure it is full.

Will 1994 dodge dakota 4x4 rear end match up to my 1995 dodge dakota 4x4. gear ratio wise

There should be a silver tag under one of the bolts on the rear ends. The numbers must match. If no tag is present with one wheel off the ground count the number of rotations and note the clock position of the final position of the drive shaft to make the wheel turn 2 complete revolutions. 3.50 rear end = 3 full turns of the drive shaft plus a half turn (6 o'clock.)

How to tell which rear end i have in my 89 ramcharger

There will be a part number stamped into the rear end. The dodge dealer can look it up. Also, if it's the stock rear end, the vin number is all you need to tell the dealer.

Rear end noise and seizing now

Sounds like one of two things is happening
1). the spider gears are binding
2). the ring gear is binding on the pinion

Check the pinion gear bolt for tightness first, then check for excessive end play. Make sure you have the correct fluid for your rear end type (limited slip takes one type, semi-posi takes another type and even sometimes reguires an additive) Hope this helps.
