Question about 1991 Honda Accord

1 Answer

Uncontrolled revving on my 91 honda accord automatic It revs between 1000 and 3000 rpm in neutral and 1200-2500 in drive. Engine lite comes on sometimes. I have switched out the idle air control valve and don't know what else to do. And now there is a very distinctive hissing sound like leaking or sucking of air through a straw. It was not there before. Please help.

Sounds like you got an air leak in the inlet system you can find this by carefully spraying carb cleaner or similar around the inlet manifold vacuum pipes noting if there is a change in engine speed as you go,when you here a change in speed you will have found the area that the leak is in

Honda accord making a whining sound and loss of power

Ok I need some clarification here. Is it surging/chugging when accelerating? Is it having shifting issues? All the time? Or do you mean it misfires/cuts out at high rpm? (I assume you know there's a rev-limiter that will cut cylinders to keep engine from over-revving). What rpm does it cut out? Is it happening intermittently, or constantly? Also, is the car modified/raced and what condition is the engine/powertrain? Do you have mostly stock Honda tune-up parts in it? Honda's don't perform to their potential with cheap aftermarket plugs/wires/ etc. installed. Start with the basics here. Check the ignition system, fuel system/pressure, etc. Could be bad fuel too. Did you fill up at a small rural no-name station recently? Good luck.

Hello there,

This is a normal operation, all your doing is hitting the rev limiter. It's there to protect the engine from over revving. The Powertrain Control Module or PCM cuts fuel to the engine intermittently to keep the engine from revving past a predetermined RPM when in "neutral", and in "park" if it's an automatic. Just in case something like a foreign object or a small child or animal were to inadvertently depress the accelerator pedal and rev the engine too high and damage the engine in result. I hope this info helps, and just for peace of mind, I am a Master Certified Ford Technician. Enjoy your new exhaust!! I'm sure it sounds great!!

My honda 2003 jerks when i change gear from to Reverse or Drive. Also, when on Neutral or Park, the revs/s is about 2. i dont know if that's normal. thanks

The revs should be around 700- 900 rpm while in neutral. Revs about 2 (2000 rpm) is absolutely abnormal, and of course the vehicle will **** with any gear change. Furthermore, continued operation of the car in this condition will damage the transmission. Seems like the idle sensor, MAP sensor or other part is working incorrectly. Take vehicle to a shop for a scan of the computer and repair, in order to save the VERY costly transmission.

To begin with, if you are revving a cold engine to 6000 RPM, you are asking for a blown engine. Most OBD vehicles are equipped with a rev limiter that will cut off fuel at 3000 to 4000 rpm to prevent you from over-revving your engine and blowing it up. If yours is revving to 6000 RPM cold, then the rev limiter, for some reason is not working while it is cold. I have no explaination for this. The best thing I can tell you is to stop revving your engine so high when it is cold unless you really want to see what an engine looks like after is has gone off like a grenade.

If its an automatic transmission I think its your torque converter. The fluid your seeing is transmission fluid. If I'm right it will get worse quickly without repair.a0174f0.png

Self reving problem???

This possible solution is also weird. I have a '91 Prelude Si also- GREAT car. Do you have anti-lock brake option? If you do, check the fluid level in the anti-lock reservoir. My Prelude did this revving thing twice, and while checking under the hood to see what the heck was going on, I discovered the brake fluid level was very low. I topped it off, and after giving up trying to figure what was wrong, I restarted the car, and no revving problem. I don't know why this is, but it worked for me twice. Countrycurt0
