You have the valve timimg out...you may have mixed up the pullys on the can shaft check this again by looking at were the kye ways are set and not the "dots" in the pullys

I am assuming that you have the 2.2L OHV engine (most do). If you have a timing chain problem, you may want to think about this....this engine is prone to timing chain tensioner breakage. This causes the timing chain to jump out of time. This will often cause the pistons to slam into the valves in the aluminum head, causing valve damage. If you decide to replace the timing set, insure that you get the chain, both gears, and a new tensioner. Install them and set the timing back to correct specs. THEN, perform a compression check of all cylinders BEFORE attempting to start the car. If there is uneven compression, you will need to pull the cylinder head and have it repaired or replaced before you can operate the vehicle. This is a tricky job. Aluminum heads are easy to warp and/or crack. You will need to replace all the cylinder head bolts when you replace the head as they are special bolts that are designed for one-time use as they have a stretch factor built into them. Remember to use thread sealant on those head bolts that extend into the water jacket or you will have coolant leakage. And most, important, USE A TORQUE WRENCH that is in good working order when tightening the head bolts. Be SURE to follow the correct pattern and torque settings or you will have problems.

Have you put each cylinder at top dead center on compression
stroke & done a cylinder leak down test BEFORE ever starting
the motor,& is the timing belt still on & timed correctly?

Compression is relative to many things & not much use these
days,you got it or you don't

Hi. I can give you a simple, but time consuming test to do to check your intermittent compression problem. New hydraulic lifters cause a lot of problems until its settled. Remove the camshafts and the hydraulic lifters. Take each hydraulic lifter and put it in a vice(becarefull not to damage them) and squeeze out all the oil in the lifters. Then put them back and replace camshaft and allign timing marks. Check compression ratio. What happens sometimes is that the oil pressure is too high(stuck oil pressure release valve or cold thick oil) and this causes the oil pressure to put so much pressure on the hydraulic lifters, that it slightly forces the valve open. That will cause your low compression as well as backfire through the intake.

Did chain break? if so could b u have bent the valves in the head, what happens is the piston hits them because the timing is altered,
that is the only two things that would cause that u will need to remove head to check out and replace bent valvers ...or get second hand replacement head

is the valve timing rite with piston--are the head gasket torque to specs-if can warp head--did u use a repair manual--if anothr mech didit has he been told---are all igntion wires hookd back in order--compression shud be at least 100psi-u did test--try not to turn engine u can hurt valves if timing off

2001 kia reo 4cyl. dohc replaced head gasket and had head re-surfaced put it back together and it acts like there is no compression


Did you recheck the engine valve timing (Timing Belt) after you finished? If so check it again. Timing has to be set on #1 top dead center. You probably know this if you did the head gasket.

How to chage valve seals


1- disconnect battery
2- remove valve cover
3- remove timing cover
4- set engine on top dead center #1cylinder
5- remove timing belt ( mark direction if re-using belt)
6- remove camshaft & rocker arms
7- remove spark plugs
8- install compression tester hose in cylinder that you want to replace seals and apply 90 to 120psi of air
9- install valve spring compression too and compress valve spring
10- remove valve spring locks and valve spring
11- remove old valve seal and replace with new
12- reverce order to reasable

Need to verify the timing marks on my honda civic engine i've lined them up like it shows but the engine still turns over like it has no compression after timing the belt the cam gear has the 3 lines on it...


most honda do have interference fit engines so there is that possibility of valve damage. try a compression test on all cylinders. compare readings and note any low compression or large variations from each cylinder. Make sure to disable fuel and ignition systems by pulling the corresponding fuses. Good luck

How do i set the timing after replacing the cambelt.


Put the engine at TDC compression stroke , Thats when the valves are both closed on No 1 cyl and the piston is on its compression stroke .then align all cam and crank marks. set dizzy on No 1 cylinder (rotor pointing at #1 plug wire) . rotate engine 2 revolutions and recheck all marks. Fire away
