Question about 1992 BMW 7 Series

Car will not turn off.

Car still runs with no key, battery disconnected, ignition switch has been disconnected it runs , alternator as well. never seen anything like this

It is an ignition problem... could be the Ignition Switch or the Ignition Coil. The key assembly will need to be removed and the ignition lock will require replacement.

I hear in Porsche vehicles that they have the time-delay relay, that's an integral part of the ignition system, which is designed to allow the engine to continue running for a few seconds after turning off the ignition switch. It's purpose is to depresssurize the fuel system (ignition spark remains but the fuel pumps are not energized). But I dont think that this is your case. I suggest check the first comments.

Car will not turn off with keys off and removed


This can be caused by a few different things.The first item to check would be the alternator. There may be a feedback to the ignition switch from the voltage regulator field exciter wire. The other scenario that we commonly see is feedback from an aftermarket ignition system that utilizes an internal relay, or both a battery and ignition source to power the system. These are fairly common problems that people experience when using many aftermarket-wiring systems. Generally, an OEM harness will not have the problem of alternator "run-on", as there is usually a resistance wire in the dash harness to keep this from happening. Solution: To figure out where the problem exists, start the car and with the key in the ON position and the car running, turn off the key. With the ignition turned off and the car continuing to run, simply remove the plug from the alternator (DO NOT TRY AND REMOVE THE BATTERY POWER WIRE FROM THE POWER STUD!) and the car should shut off if the alternator is creating the problem. If it does not stop running, your feedback problem is coming from something other that the alternator. If you are using an aftermarket ignition unit, check to see if there is a fix available that includes a diode to put in line on the ignition feed to keep their system from back feeding into the ignition switch. If you do not have an aftermarket ignition system in your car and it continues to run after pulling the alternator plug, you'll want to call tech support from your harness manufacturer for help. If your car does shut off when you remove your alternator plug, you may have to put a diode in line on the field exciter wire to keep the alternator from back feeding to the ignition switch. Again check with the harness manufacturer for help.

New alternator & good charge on battery but when the ignition is turned to the on position the power on the entire car shuts down??? Starter maybe???


Have you checked the ignition switch not the key switch the ignition switch its what everything runs through.I would start there then maybe the key switch.

How to replace an ignition switch


If you're having trouble starting your car and you've been through troubleshooting the starter and alternator, it may be time to replace the ignition switch. Though this is a job best suited for a professional mechanic, if you're willing to take it on, here's how to replace the ignition switch in your car.
Instructions:
1.Disconnect the negative battery cable from the terminal on the battery. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers by unscrewing or unclipping them.
2.Remove the steering wheel by lifting off the center cover, disconnecting the horn wire and removing the retaining nut and washer. Make a mark on the steering wheel spline and the wheel itself so you can line it back up precisely. Pull the steering wheel straight back to remove from the shaft.
3.Take off windshield wiper and turn signal switches by pulling them off as you did the steering wheel and disconnect the wiring. Slide the spacer sleeve off of the steering column.
4. Unscrew the ignition switch mounting screws. Pull out the ignition switch. Disconnect the wiring connector from back of the ignition switch. Simply loosen the tabs and pull it out.
5. Insert your key into the ignition. Turn the ignition switch to the locked position. Depress the retaining pin with a small screwdriver and turn the key to the Off position to free the cylinder. Once it is free, turn the key to lock position and remove the key and key cylinder.
6. Install your old key cylinder into the new ignition switch assembly. Make sure the contacts in the cylinder and assembly line up. Reattach wiring to ignition switch, slide it into place, screw in mounting screws and reassemble steering wheel and switches.

The key won't turn off completely to remove from ignition unless i remove the pos battery cable first


DONT REMOVE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE FIRST YOU WILL SHORT OUT THE PCM AND THE ALTERNATOR.IN CASE YOU CANT TURN OFF CAR ONE TIME DEAL DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY FIRST. BUT FIRST TURN OFF RADIO BEFORE REMOVING BATTERY CABLE.YOU NEED TO FIX IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER DONT KEEP DISCONNECTING BATTERY WHILE ENGINE RUNNING BECAUSE YOU WILL DAMAGE PCM.AND SHORT OUT ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE REGULATOR.

Keeps cutting off after restart


SINCE CAR WONT CRANK. NOW IS THE TIME TO REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH KEY LOCK CYLINDER ITS BROKEN THAT WHY THE CAR KEYS WOULDNT TURN OFF CAR.DISCONNECTING BATTERY CABLES WITH CAR RUNNIMG WILL.SHORT OUT ALTERNATOR AND PCM.IF IN CASE YOU HAD TO REMOVE BATTERY CABLE REMOVE THE GROUND NEGATIVE CABLE FIRST.MAKE SURE ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS OFF LIKE RADIO. AC SYSTEM OFF.THIS WILL PREVENT LARGE ELECTRICAL ARC FROM BATTERY THIS IS ONE TIME PROCEDURE IN CASE ENGINE WONT SHUT OFF ITS A GAMBLE BECAUSE IT WILL TAKE OUT ALTERNATOR AND PCM.REPLACE THE SWITCH AND KEY LOCK CYLINDER DONT KEEP STARTING CAR BY DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY CABLE YOU WILL DAMAGE IGNITION ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

Ignition


the actuator inside the sterring column that the lock cylinder turns is boken, this is a very complex job and is not for the home tech without a factory service manual.

1990 buick no start turn key dash lights go out and all is dead


When you say "turn key dash lights go out and all is dead", do the lights come back on when you turn the key back to "off"?
With key off, try turning on your headlights- are they bright?
Flip to high beams-do they get brighter?
**If lights get dim while trying this, it's the battery-(dead/needs charged or replaced-which may have been caused by a bad alternator).
Leave lights on, now turn your ignition switch to "on"-do the lights get dim or go out?
Try and start the car-anything change?
If the lights were fine until you tried to start the car, more than likely your battery terminals need cleaning/tightening.
The lights should at least get dim when you try and start the car but only while the starter turns over: when the engine is running your lights (as well as all your other electrics) are powered by the alternator.
If you do all this and lights are okay all through this procedure, your problem is probably in your starter circuit. (Starter relay, ignition/key switch)

Entire 1996 blazer electrical dies when starter solenoid engaged


bad ground cable,use a jumper cable from negative to alternator bracket, if it starts thats it.
