There are many probable causes for this problem. The one that you can check is the fluid level.
If the fluid level is the problem then:
Correct the fluid level as necessary or change the fluid and filter as needed. If the problem persists have a tranny professional diagnosis the probable cause with a factory scan tool.
Good Luck!!

Have 98 ford windstar van when trans shifts from first to second it feels like someone hit you in the back other wise it works good is it an easy problem to fix would a fluid and filter change cure it?

Get someone to put a OBD tool on it and get some codes and look them up, but sometimes it could be dirty fluid filter like you said. I hope your tranny is not slipping.

I have a 98 ford windstar, and the tranny went out in it. so i went to a junk a yard and bought a 98 ford windstar tranny from them. my dad took out my old tranny that was in the van and said that both...

You answered your own question.
They don't look the same,so why not return it.

Having owned a Trans Shop, I will tell you, getting a used trans will be the worst auto repair decision of your life.

Your buying something most likely worse than your pulling out of yours.

All Auto Trans need to be perfectly super clean inside to work well.
80% of all failures are due to not changing the fluid every 30,000 miles or two years.

Your best bet is what is called over-the-counter. You drop off your trans at a shop, they rebuild it with the latest updates and you install a rebuilt converter, adding a quart of fluid first.

All transaxles, especially van type ,don't hold up well. Not many see 100K.

You never want to have a front end collision with a van and expect your quality of life to be very good afterward. A larger SUV is safer and rear wheel trans, hold up pretty well.

1995 Ford Windstar transmission is slipping and shifting hard

bad news, 1995 ford windstar transmissions fail extremely frequently at about 60000 miles, I would not waste money in a transmission flush as it will most likely not correct the problem. It is a dsign flaw, the transmission cannot handle the torque of the 3,8L engine and the 700Lbs of added weight of the windstar body.
I'd just use it untill it fails...

My 1995 ford windstar rpm move up and down at all speeds.

1st q? does it only do it at certain speed ie) 80 km/h if so you are either low on transmission fluid or tranny is starting to slip.

Diagram for transmission for windstar

Is the tranny slipping or is it going into neutral by itself, had this problem on my 98 windstar GL, changed the transmission range selector and it works great. Took about a half hour to change and the part cost $58.00 at the Ford dealer.
