Question about 1995 Chevrolet C/K 2500

1 Answer

My 1995 Chevy Silverado , 4x4 , 5.7 litre motor will not recognize or go into park. The transmission shift lever will not stay or go into park. I have to place the transmission in Neutral to start the truck. Is it the "shift actuator switch"? Any reply is appreciated. thanks

Check the shifter cable for loose brackets or a damaged shifter cable and inspect the neutral safety switch down on the side of the transmission, and if it has dual wire connectors then there is a possibility that the neutral safety switch is faulty and the internal components are damaged and it is not allowing the shift linkage back into park. These neutral safety switches were notorious for melting the wire connector inside of the neutral safety switch, which requires the replacing of both the neutral safety switch and the wire connector. (The wire connectors are available from a GM dealer) If there is no problem with the neutral safety switch then the problem will most likely be a fault with the parking pawl linkage under the transmission oil pan, or the shifter inter-lock solenoid located in the steering column has no power from the brake light switch or it is faulty.

To clarify: The shift lever (inside the cab,on the steering column) will not go into park, therefore I cannot start the truck. I can only start the vehicle if I shift the lever to neutral before starting. The transmission works well otherwise. It's an automatic tranny.

My 2001 did the same thing when I shifted to drive or reverse. What I found is the pivot ball that connects shift cable to transmission had rusted off. I removed broken pieces then used 1/4 inch bolt double nutted to trans lever. Never had the problem again

Transmission shifts hard into second gear(auto trans). However, when shutting engine off and restarting, the hard shift will go away. It will come back in a few days. Doesn't seem to matter how many...

it may be a bad tps ( throttle position sensor ). it causes transmission shift issues, bucking, jerking, idle surging, engine cut off, surge while crusing down highway. if this does not solve problem, it may be a sticking valve body in transmission. have a good day !! for an automatic tranny.

Transmission won't shift out of park

If the transmission won't shift out of park, take your center console out around the shift lever, it's kind of annoying with it being in park. Then in front of the shifter you will see a little lockout solinoid unplug it, it will only have two wires on it, then follow it down to a little metal lever push the shift button and push down on the lever at the same time if it comes out of park turn your key on put it back in park while the lockout switch is still unplugged, and with the key on, it should come back out of park. If it works like this then your lockout switch is bad.
