Question about 2000 Lincoln Continental

The engine overheats at highway speeds. The cooling fans are coming on and at normal speeds okay just at highway speeds 65-75 mph the engine overhaeats?

Hi

this is because the radiator may have chocks in it. so the rate of cooling might be reduced. so the cooling while normal running wil be ok but when you go in highways the engine generates more heat which in unable to cool by the engine.

try checking the cooling fan.this might have reduced the speed of running due to agening. so try replacing with high watt fan so that good cooling may takes place.

I v checked the cooling system, no leaks, new water pump, water pipes solid, changed cyl. head gasket, new radiator cap, checked water level, oil level, fan working, water circulating.


no car make or model mentioned so getting an answer is hit and miss
however what you describe indicates a fan drive problem so if it is electric fan cooled-- check the fans for full blade speed ( weak motor operation) or if viscous fan hub ( fan clutch) replace the viscous hub
it is all about moving air through the radiator when the vehicle speed is slow and the engine rpms are high
if the fan is not doing the job of pulling air through the radiator , the car will overheat
at highway speeds the ram action of the air flow virtually makes a fan useless as there is more than enough air passing through the radiator to cool the water
Im guessing here but I suspect that you have a viscous fan hub

When does it overheat? At idle, or at highway speed? Is the coolant level where it should be? Overheating at idle or highway speed may be a faulty thermostat. If it overheats only at idle then it is likely a cooling fan fault. To determine if the fan is working start the engine and switch the A/C on, the fan should come on, if it does not, then you need to have the computer "scanned" to see if it can detect the reason for the fan not coming on. If the fan is switching on, then you need to have the water pump checked to see if in fact it is pumping coolant (this could also be the cause of overheating at highway speed) If you are overheating only at highway speed you may want to have the enigine checked for a blown head-gasket, or faulty radiator.

When we turn on our heater on the temp is fine but when we turn the heater off the van overheats.


You may have an engine cooling fan that isn't working. When you run the heater you are removing some heat from the cooling system which aids in keeping the engine cool. If the cooling fan in front of the radiator isn't working then the engine can overheat at slower speeds when there isn't any air being forced through the radiator by the forward motion of the vehicle. If this problem is happening only at slow speeds then I would suspect a cooling fan BUT if it happens at steady speeds over 35 mph you may have a different problem.Hope this helps and good luck!

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose).The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling,pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing,the blockage may be there.
Also note that the cooling fans don't come on until the coolant temperature hits around 225 degrees.
During normal highway driving the fans will very rarely come on(if at all) due to constant air flow through the radiator.They will only usually come on in heavy traffic conditions on a hot day.
But......if you have the Air Con switched on, the fans will run all of the time.

Check to make sure that the engine cooling fan is running when the a/c is on. If this fan isn't running then the a/c won't cool for more than a minute or so and the engine will overheat when in slow or stop & go traffic BUT the engine may stay cool if you are driving at highway speeds [40 mph and above] due to the amount of air being forced through the radiator and a/c condensor. If you find the fan[s] isn't running at all then check the engine cooling fan fuse next as it may have blown. Hope this gives you a place to start looking and good luck!

Vehicle overheating


Several things can contribute to overheating. If the vehicle doesn't overheat at idle but slowly begins to overheat at highway speeds then I would suspect a partially plugged radiator that just simply can't get rid of the extra heat generated at higher engine loads and speeds. The radiator could be plugged internally which would require it's removal and professional cleaning [or replacement] or it could be plugged externally with bugs, dirt, and other crud that is restricting the airflow through it which can usually be fixed by thoroughly cleaning both sides of the radiator with a garden hose. If, however, the engine runs at near normal temps at highway speeds but overheats at lower speeds then I would look at the radiator cooling fan operation. Once you are above about 35 mph there is sufficient air being rammed through the radiator to cool it but below this the cooling fan[s] need to work to limit how warm the coolant can get. A more rare cause could be a leaking head gasket which often will cause a random sudden overheat condition [often with a loss of heat from the heater during the event] that initially may come and go for several days or weeks before becoming severe. Make sure your cooling system is properly filled with a mix of 50/50 coolant and water and hasn't accidentally been filled with only 100% antifreeze and this too will cause odd heating problems.

The cooling fan on my 2001 ford escort SE will not work normally


Check the coolant temperature with the car stopped. At idle with the hood up keep the thermometer in the coolant. Confirm if the coolant is not overheating but the engine is!!

Run the A/C keeping the thermometer in the coolant and allow the fan to kick on.

If with the A/C on the engine doesn't overheat then it confirms that the low speed on the fan motor is not working. Read the description of the Taurus where the low speed is used for normal operation when temperature is required but the high speed is activated when the A/C is on. The circuit is simple.

In your case the low speed has to be activated for the A/C to go into the high speed. The fact that the high speed is working and low speed is not indicates the low speed of the fan is defective.

Other problems such as the thermostat or plugged cooling system(radiator clogged) could be the root problem!

High mileage 1996 Ford Explorer v8 overheats at 75-80 mph


if your mechanic seen no leaks from hoses or thermostat housing its sounds that either your fan clutch or your thermostat is bad. if its heats will driving streets and not highway its your fan clutch and needs to be replaced. if it overheats in streets and highway its your thermostat and needs to be replaced,you will need a thermostat and gasket with some silicone. Drain, follow the radiator hose to the housing and take 3 bolt off, clean housing well,CAREFULLY install the t-stat exactly the way is was taken out (pic), gasket,sillicone, bolt. ecc3d0c.jpg   its an easy job. your raidator fins my be clogged and also you shouldnt have a clutch fan on it it should be a locked fan!!!! for more air flow!!!
