If your timing belt breaks some of the valves will stay open and the pistons will come up and either break the valve or could put a hole in a piston. This is very costly. The rattle could be the belt tensioner

Did you check the timing belt to see if it broke? It ha a 2.5 and it has belt. Remove timing cover at the front of the engine and have someone crank it while you watch the cam to see if it turns. If it doesn't turn, replace the belt.

Fan belt broke 2003 cavalier drove it another 10 miles and than it stopped. will i have to reset the timing when i replace the belt.

That will depend on why it stopped. If the engine seized because it overheated then your are going to have to do more than replace that timing belt. If it just shut down but still starts now that it is cooled down then no unless you timing belt broke. If it cranks but doesn't start now you have damaged something else in the engine when it over heated. Yo can do a compression check to see if your timing belt is broken.

It is possible that your tensioner pulley is seized and will have to be replaced as well. This happened to my 2001 F-150, the tensioner pulley seized and shredded the serpentine belt.

At the base of the distributor there is a metal bracket with a bolt holding the bracket to the intake manifold. This is the distributor hold down bracket and you will need to loosen the bolt a few turns. A timing light is needed to find the correct timing of the engine, so connect one to the car in proper order. With the clamp loose and the timing light on, start the car and point the timing light at the harmonic balancer where the timing gauge is located on the timing belt cover. The light will show you where the timing is and so adjust the distributor (clockwise or counter-clockwise) until the desired setting is achieved. When the timing is set, turn off the car and tighten up the hold down bolt, be careful not to turn the distributor, and this is how to set the timing.
