The switch for your brake lights is located near your brake pedal,it is usually a spring loaded switch that comes out when the pedal is pushed & the pedal pushes it back in when it is released, this switch may have come loose & is active all the time, you need to make sure that it is pushed hard up against the brake pedal & tighten the adjusting screws to lock it in position, check that your stop lights come on when the brake pedal is pushed in....hope this helps....cheers

I also had this problem. This is what I found. On the floor below the brake pedal there was a plastic button looking thing that was shattered. After noticing that my brake lights stayed lit, I looked at the brake light switch and found that there was a plastic button that fits onto the pedal shaft and actually engages the switch with pedal full up (not using brakes). This was the part that had broken and was on my floor. Without this plastic pad the pedal shaft will not engage the light switch. Actually the switch will fit dead center into the hole made in the pedal shaft where the plastic pad was attached. So to remedy this problem I made a new pad out of teflon and glued it to the shaft with lock tite to solve the problem.

Had the same thing happen but I used a button head bolt with a nut in the hole on the brake pedal and just adjusted the brake light by backing the switch out a few turns. It has been working great and I have not had my battery die from my brake lights being on. DW

The part costs $3.47 (bought 4 days ago) from Nissan dealer took about 30 seconds to pop in. The reason they made the plastic piece is to save the plastic button switch. A bolt is more likely to break the switch itself.

exactly what happened to mine as well; found pieces of a round plastic button on th floor by the brake pedal & the brake lights stayed on. Fixed it with a $.43 neoprene 3/8 hole plug from Home Depot

I have a 1997 Nissan Sentra GXE, 1.6L. My brake lights stay on all of the time, so I had to disconnect the wires so I doesn't drain my battery. Also, when I turn on my head lights, there are no running lights, including the brake light still doesn't work! Do you think my brake light switch is bad? Thanks, Joe

Why r my tail lights staying on my 1993 gmc Sierra

Are you sure it is the tail lights and not the brake lights? If the park lights are staying on, the front should be on as well in most cases. If it is the brake lights staying on, suspect a faulty brake light switch located at the brake pedal

Abs light stays on and brake light on 98 durango

The regular brake warning light is for the parking brake being applied or the brake fluid is low. You would need to get the abs system scanned for trouble codes to proceed.

We have an Audi TT and the brake lights stay on after you turn the car off. Also noted that a passing car informed us that the brake lights stay on while driving as well. Could this possible be a switch...

If all the brake lights stay on then the brake light switch is the first thing to check. It cod also be dagger wiring to the switch or it may just be loose and/or out of place.

Check your brake switch as it could be faulty hence causing a close circuit which in turn causes the brake light to stay on.It is normally located at the top of the brake pedal.Hope this helps.
