Oops. The lifters tapping tells me the engine is wearing out. The oil pump could be wearing. The passages for oil probably are gapped too wide. Need to overhaul or replace to fix.

The engine will tap at low rpm and quit at highter rpm


Check for dirty oil, or wrong weight of oil in vehicle, if not those items then I would check the cam lifters, and if a gas model also check your plug wires etc. The tapping is a starved or worn lifter tapping , you want hear it as much when idling up

BAD LIFTERS WILL MAKE A NOISE.IF VALVE LIFTERS AND LOWER SPRING SEALS BEEN REPLACED AND LIFTERS STILL NOISEY.EITHER ENGINE OIL TOO THICK OR ENGINE NEED OIL CHANGE + FILTER CHANGE.DIRTY OIL CAUSE LIFTER NOISE OR OIL PASSAGES IN THE CYLINDER HEAD STOPPED UP NOT ALLOWING LIFTERS TO GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF OIL.OR OIL PRESSURE TO LOW DUE TO FAULTY OIL PUMP.OIL PRESSURE SHOULD BE 29 PSI @2000 RPM. Lifters making tapping noise. whats the cause??? 2003 mercedes sl55 amg. v8 kompressor


1 of two things. They are hyd lifters so there is no adjustment to be done. So it is either a lack of oil pressure or an odd thing but does happen, a small piece of derbis will get into the pressure bleed hole, the oil is push out as the camshaft comes up to open the valve, the lifter will collapes and not re-pump up due to the hole being closed off. Im quite sure AMG rquires Mobil1 oil, sometimes extream temps either higher or lower will change viscosity requirements. you may need the 15W 50 to maintain enough pressure where you are at or it is possible the oil is broke down so bad that it is no longer able to maintain the correct amount of PSI. 1st things first. Put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the motor, observe pressure after complete warm up. If it is too low go to the 15W 50 weight oil. If it is an oil pressure issue two things should happen. 1 the lifter making noise should be farthest from the pump. If not you should do a very carefull inspection check psi with mechanical gauge 1st if it's low, then you'll have to find the causeor cause. if psi is within spec you have a bad lifter IE: dirt or collapsed spring.

Tapping noise in engine and oil light comes on...vehicle does not need oil


It may need oil pressure. Some of these light go off when the pressure is low. Get the pressure checked @ idle & high RPM.
It could be a bad sensor as well. Check for power at the sensor. If it is for oil level, then it will be at the bottom of the oil pan. The pressure sensor is in the block.
The tapping could be a result of under lubed valves from low pressure, or it could be the hydraulic lifters, which is pretty normal in most cars.

That ticking your hearing is most likely a valve lifter or tappet that is dirty or failing.At low RPM the oil pressure is lower, as you increase the engine speed the oil pressure rises; with this the lifter sees more oil pressure too and it fills fully with oil thus the ticking stops. You may be able to fluch the oil system in hopes of cleaning out any debris; my gut says the lifter is beginning to fail and should be replaced. If you have the ability and tools this is something you can do in your garage; pick up a manual and review the procedure before tearing into the engine.

Chevy suburban 2000 5.3 low to no oil pressure at idle with taping noises, at speed 40 psi. and no noise. Any suggestions? Thanks


maybe a dumb question, but have you checked the engine oil level (not trying to be rude) . if you have check the type of oil filter you are putting on. But you mention tapping noises....do they increase slightly as engine rpm increases then dissapear. if so, i would wager that the noise you are hearing would be the hydraulic lifters. the reason you hear them is that they are not getting a sufficient amount of oil pressure...your oil pump might be dead or dying...would go that route.

also, ensure that you are using the correct weight of oil in your vehicle (follow manufactures recommendations)

My lifters are tapping what can i do to solve this problem? My 2005 magnum did run low in oil does this mean my motor is shot


Not necessarily, but you need to check a bunch of things.

Did it run low on oil or out of oil, did the oil pressure go to zero for more than a minute.
Yes - you may have problems
No - you probably did kill things - but watch your cooling level for a while - using water could mean a head gasket leak

Is it really lifters, listen real close and make sure you think that is what it is.

Lifters tap because they loose their oil pressure. I would run it for a while and see if they come back up. Else you need to identify which one and replace it.

This is not an overwelmingly serious problem unless you are reving high. The lifters can be quite loose and not cause any catasrophic problems.

I good grade of low viscosity synthetic oil might also help.

You can try adding Marvel Mystery oil about 1000 KM before your next oil change and hope that would clean the dirt from the lifter's. If not, your cam's could be worn. Good luck and try not to run in the high RPM's with the thiner oil in your blazer.

Tapping noise


A tapping sound could be lifter tick, or rod knock... if it goes away, what you have is lifter tick, check your oil, low oil makes it worse.

Oil pumps up the hydraulic lash adjusters in your valve covers, at lower RPMs, the oil pressure is lower and will not fully pressurize them. Try holding your rpm at about 3500 or so with the car in neutral (parked) and see if it goes away, it should.

In later years (I think starting in 97 or so) mitsu started using a larger bore so called "third gen" lash adjuster. They don't tick as much, but they still do at times.

The good news, lash adjusters are not THAT hard to replace, figure a set of 24 will run you less than 150 in parts.

The better news, it doesn't hurt anything, as long as you can live with the sound, there isn't any reason to change them.
