Hi, The light on the air conditioning switch on the dashboard does not illuminate - when the car went in for a service the mechanic said that the air conditioning drive/pully belt was missing - would this cause the switch not to work? Is there some sort of safety cut out for when the belt is missing or do I have a bigger problem?
Many thanks
That's a good question. I've always had a belt connected to the compressor on my hondas (1979, 1981) and worked on vehicles that had the belt on.
Most people like to have a/c working on their cars.
I would imagine that if the belt broke in an emergency, that it wouldn't hurt anything if run for a short distance before repairs could be performed.
Good luck on this one.
Remove the alternator/power steering and water pump drive belt to gain access to the air conditioning belt.
Loosen the tensioner pulley locknut, then turn the adjusting screw to raise or lower the tensioner pulley assembly. Remove the belt.
To install:
Install the belt.
To adjust the belt, loosen the tensioner pulley nut and adjust the belt tension by tightening the adjusting screw. Tighten the pulley nut to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) after adjustment.
Install the alternator/power steering and water pump drive belt and adjust.
Start the engine and check for proper belt alignment and any abnormal noise.
