Question about Ford Ranger

1 Answer

I have a 98 ford ranger with a 3.0 L engine and auto transmission. The codes say it misfire on number 1 and number 4 cyclinders. Sometimes it runs extremely rough and others it runs fine. I've replaced O2 sensors, spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel filter and air filter. I've disconnected battery to reset engine codes and still problem presists. Any help you can give would be appericated

If the misfire happens to be on the same coil pack, if so equipped, then go for that coil pack.

If the vehicle has the on spark plug coils then replace for 1 and 4 cylinders.

Seems like you changed a lot of parts on this vehicle o2 sensor, plugs, wires, fuel and air filters.
3.0L Engine To Remove:
Do not pull on the spark plug wire because it can separate from the connector inside the spark plug boot.

  1. Disconnect the electrical connectors for the fuel charging wiring from the ignition coil.
  2. Squeeze the locking tabs and twist while pulling up to disconnect the spark plug wires.
  3. Remove the bolts and ignition coil.
To Install:
NOTE: Wipe the coil towers with a clean cloth dampened with soap and water. Remove any soap film and dry with compressed air. Examine for cracks, carbon tracking and dirt.
  1. Install the ignition coil and bolts. Torque to 44-62 in-lb (5-7 Nm).
  2. Connect the spark plug wires.
  3. Connect the electrical connectors for the fuel charging wiring to the ignition coil.
Secondary Spark Test:
Secondary Spark Test This spark tester looks just like a spark plug. Attach the clip to ground and crank the engine to check for spark. I have a 98 ford - 91052p10.jpg

This spark tester has an adjustable air-gap for measuring spark strength and testing different voltage ignition systems. 91052p11.jpg

Attach the clip to ground then crank the engine to check for spark. 91052p12.jpg

This spark tester is the easiest to use. Just place it on a plug wire and the spark voltage is detected; the bulb on the top will flash with each pulse. 91052p10.jpg

NOTE: The best way to perform this procedure is to use a spark tester (available at most automotive parts stores). Three types of spark testers are commonly available:
  • The Neon Bulb type is connected to the spark plug wire and flashes with each ignition pulse.
  • The Air Gap type must be adjusted to the individual spark plug gap specified for the engine.
  • The last type of spark plug tester looks like a spark plug with a grounding clip on the side, but there is no side electrode for the spark to jump.
NOTE: The last two types of testers allow the user to not only detect the presence of spark, but also the intensity of the spark. Orange/yellow is weak, blue is strong.
  1. Disconnect a spark plug wire at the spark plug end.
  2. Connect the plug wire to the spark tester and ground the tester to an appropriate location on the engine or frame.
  3. Crank the engine and check for spark at the tester.
  4. If spark exists at the tester, the ignition system is functioning properly.
  5. If spark does not exist at the spark plug wire, perform a diagnostic test of the ignition system using individual component diagnosis procedures.

1990 2.9liter ford ranger and its misfire on4,5,6

check your fuel injector wiring harness connectors with noid light one wire has power constant the other is a pulse to actuate the injector all the cylinders have good compression and all that you have done and still misfire then it has to be injector or wiring possible bad ground , those 3 cylinders is on the same bank , noid lights you can get at your local auto parts

Engine light is on, flashes when driving above 100 Km

stop by local parts store (Autozone,Advance, etc) and have them do a free fault code test. They can print out a list of faults and clear the codes

Misfire on number 2 cyl

Cylinders are numbered from front to rear (grille to firewall) passenger side: 1-2-3, driver's side: 4-5-6. Firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6
Did you check by pulling #2 out while the engine is in idle to see no weakness from the engine? BTW your coil pack cost $80.

Check engine light, on and running rough

This misfire is most likely due to bad injectors. Check injector pulse with a NOID light. If pulse is good you need new injectors. However before you do all of this get a compression guage and check compression on all cylinders. The numbers shouldn't be more than 10 psi difference in all cylinders for example if cylinder# 1= 160 psi cyl#2=168 that's good but if cylinder#3= 176 and 4=179 there is a problem with 1&2. bad valves or bad head hasket etc. Good luck and thanks for using FIX YA.

Runs rough and Terrible Mileage

Not sure if anyone has helped you on this one, but try a few things to kinda elimate some causes.
1) pull the plug wires one at a time to see which cyclinders aren't hitting
2) you can check the resistance of the coil on both the primary and the secondary sides for correct resistence
3) check the wires for shorts etc, which prob aint the wires
4) you can do a compression test on the cyclinders that aint firing
5) if all those pass ohmn the injectors all of them, on a 98 not sure what the reading should be but my 92 is .15 and anything within a few ohmns within each other or they read nothing replace those injectors.
I just replaced all 6 on mine solved my no fire issue in cyc 5 and now the mis has came back. I've yet to dive in to start my checking all over again. but here's another place to look, there is a ignition module on the truck think it should be near the battery.
