Replacing transfer case and the gasket is bad. All local parts stores do not have it. I am trying to save a trip to the dealer. Do I have any alternatives?

Plastic coated magazine covers(paper)make a good gasket if you also use a gasket sealant.......

Water and steam from side of engine near coil pack


- Could possibly be worn or blown head gasket. Cracked head worst case. Pretty expensive fix either way if taken to a shop or dealer, but can be taken care of. If driven too long or hard, seal or head could fail further mixing your coolant, oil and gas causing serious damage to your engine.
- Best case, check your freeze plugs, one or more may need replacing. They are pretty cheap and fairly easy to replace, and can be acquired at your local auto parts store.
- To prevent future problems with this, you can take precautions by replacing your thermostat, changing coolants to 50/50 anti-freeze, and flushing your radiator. I would NEVER use stop-leak, as it may fix leaks with your radiator and/or other components, but can cause other blockages internally inside your engine. Also, check your hoses for cracks and pinholes or leaks. Hope this fixes your problem.

Most likely a 4t80 ******, biggest FWD unit GM makes. Only way to drain is by removing pan. That includes replacing gasket, and while you have it off, you might as well replace filter - theyre usually sold together in a kit. Must make sure that all debris from old gasket is clear of pan and case surfaces. Any leftovers can make for a bad seal on new gasket, causing leaks. Consult a parts store or transmission specialist for the proper dexterity and amount of new ****** fluid to fill unit after the new pan and gasket have been installed. Also, before doing this yourself, get prices on all supplies and then compare it to the going rate of your local transmission shop for a fluid change. You may be surprised and save yourself a huge headache and a mess in your garage.

Solinoid on hi low gear shifter only working when tapped with a hammer. Can i change just the solinoid or do i have to spilt the transfer case


You can replace just the electric shift motor. Either check local autoparts store or local Toyota dealer for correct part.

Get away from the dealer,get away from the dealer

Go to the auto parts store,buy the motor & put it in

The whole trip to store,back & R&R motor will take
no more than couple hours

You will see the wire connectors,motor in plain site
don't need pictures or instructions to remove 3 or 4 bolts

Yesterday I look my car to the local dealership for an oil change, and they told me that I had a leak around the transfer case. Said it was an "O" ring. The parts are going to cost $50, but...


YES, iT IS HARD TO GET TO AND THEY HAVE TO PULL THE WHOLE TRANSFER CASE TO GET TO IT.

YOU COULD GET IT DONE CHEAPER BY A SHOP THAN THE Dealer. Maybe a couple hundred less.

Need replace it; the switch is on the Transfer Case.

In order to get the correct switch you need to determine what type of transfer case you have. You can do this by crawling under the vehicle near the middle and look for a small round metal tag mounted on the back side of the transfer case. Once you have that number (new process type 231, 242, 249...). If your local jeep dealer is of a friendly sort you may even be able to avoid all the crawling around and just tell the parts manager your VIN# and he will be able to tell you what type transfer case you have - provided that it is the factory installed original.

Computer says to check 4WD Switch on 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee.


I just fixed the same problem with my own GC Limited - and it WAS a dealer part (in my case). In order to get the correct switch you need to determine what type of transfer case you have. You can do this by crawling under the vehicle near the middle and look for a small round metal tag mounted on the back side of the transfer case. Once you have that number (new process type 231, 242, 249...) you can order the correct part.

If your local jeep dealer is of a friendly sort you may even be able to avoid all the crawling around and just tell the parts manager your VIN# and he will be able to tell you what type transfer case you have - provided that it is the factory installed original.

According to the mechanic who works on my 93 Jeep it's one of three things:
1) Corrosion on the connector to the switch (which is located on top of the transfer case).
2) A bad switch. Part cost about $22.00, or
3) A bad console display. he says they have had a fair number of console display units fail. That one runs about $240.
My Jeep display it only once in a while. I have checked the connections and they are fine so the switch replacement is next. If that doesn't fix it I will opt to ignore the error.

Have 1990 corvette with slight oil leak on oil pan. Was told I needed to tighten bolts to correct torque. Need to know torque and in what sequence


Unless you are replacing the gasket, I'd just go around the pan and snug them up. I doubt you'll be able to hit all them very easily with the motor in the car.

Just use common sense and make them snug and don't overdo it and you should be fine. It will be clear which ones are loose when you put a wrench on them.

Ned to change the oil in transfer case


The Z71 typically comes with the auto 4wd transfer case (cannot remember the GM number). This requires AutoTrak II, which is available at a GM dealer. Do not use any other fluid in this transfer case! The previous post was correct in the location of the two plugs, but not on the fluid (the other types of transfer cases by GM use ATF). The transfer case is located under the truck right under the cab. There is a small skid plate under it, and a large driveshaft leaves the rear end of the case heading to the rear differential (axle). If you have the manual or electronic w/o auto 4WD transfer case, you can use Dexron III, but Dexron VI is a better fluid that is also now available at your local auto parts store. Again, if you have the AUTO 4WD button in the dash, use the AutoTrak II fluid from the dealer.
