Try replacing the MAS (mass airflow sensor) - being the car is running rough and dying, it sounds like it may not be getting the appropriate O2 needed - One way to test, if you can get the car to stay running in park - tap the MAS with a screwdriver - (located between the airfilter casing and the intake manifold) - you'll see a small wiring harness out of the side it - it's usually black and either square shaped or rectangular - also make sure the air filter is in good shape.

If when tapping on the sensor the car dies, idle fluctuates; then it needs repalced (or possibly cleaned - purchase a can of MAS sensor cleaner {local auto parts dealer} and clean it first (spary sensor generously and let air dry for 15-20 minutes - put back together and start car - if there is no difference, then replace - if this is not the problem - try to get the car to a auto parts dealer and have them run a diagnostics test: Here are some other things that may cause this:

crank shaft sensor (car usually won't run at all if bad)

cam shaft sensor

harmonic balancer (will throw timing off dramatically: do not drive if this is cracked, broken, or (if rubber exists) is missing chunks...

This is most likely fuel injected and has coil packs instead of a distrubutor:

If coil packs: have each tested and replace any that are bad (must remove to be tested). This may also have a modular that he pack(s) sit on - If this is bad, it will need to be replaced (cannot be tested) - signs are: bubbles and/or melted appearance on the top of the modular.

If equipped with distributor:

replace: cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires.

Also, if the check engine light is coming on, replace the O2 sensors (have diagnostics test done will determine if these are bad - codes will be presented for each "malfunction" or "faulty" components.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

325ci engine stalls

It may be worth checking the throttle pot for consistancy in its resistance reading from idle to full throttle. Ive had one of these fail with a dead spot just off idle. This caused the ecu to loose coms for a short while and stalled the car. Also the idle stab gets confused when this happens. This was on a 320 though but might be worth a look. Do the test with the plug disconnected and the engine & ignition off.

running out of fuel sucks the dirt off the bottom of the tank it might have caused it to fail i think you can get to it from under the back seat you can see if the pump has power there as well

If it runs that bad, you should have a check engine light and some codes set. Have you tried having anyone read the computer error codes?
Check the plastic tubing from the air filter to the throttle body for cracks.

I have a Semi-Automatic 2005 BMW e46 318i. The engine randomly cuts out (stalls) when decellerating, coming to a stop, or when stopped. Other than this problem the car drives fine, and the engine starts up...

The problem you are having sounds suspiciously like the torque converter is not disengaging to allow your engine to spin freely until you are ready to accelerate. If when decelerating or coming to a stop you feel a jerking sensation similar to driving a vehicle with a manual transmission and bringing the vehicle to a stop without depressing the clutch, then the problem you are having is faulty Torque Converter Control Solenoid or a bad Torque Converter itself. If you have any other questions please contact me here. Good luck.

Seems you have a few problems, the irradic idle might be do to a bad idle air control valve/MAF, hard start issue i would need more info to help you better.

Hi

It sounds as though you either have a faulty O2 sensor, or there is a fuel pressure issue, which from your description, could be due to a worn fuel pump.

If the car performs ok under full acceleration, but plays up at either part throttle or no throttle, then you may well have a faulty O2 sensor.

Very best regards
