Ignition Switch removal

How to remove the ignition switch to get it re-keyed? 2001 LT is apparently different from most vehicles. Local locksmith could not see how to pull the key cylinder for repairs. Have to turn to "off" position with pliers most times now. Very annoying...

Take vin number to dealer they can make a key. those keys have a computer chip and must be programed

This year does NOT have chips in key. Any conventional blank will due. My problem is the cylinder/igniton switch...not the keys. One of the pins must have a burr on it and hangs on the key as it's turned to "OFF" position. Thus my need to remove the cylinder and take it to a locksmith...not a Chevy dealer!

I need to make a key and i cant get my key tumbler out

If you know any one capable of removing the Ignition switch you could then take the switch in to a dealership the dealer ship will probably sell you new ignition switch with keys. The other option is to take it to a locksmith and he may be able to remove the key and as long as you are the registered owner of the vehicle can make a key for it by using the vin # of the vehicle. Hope this helps

How do i remove the driver's side door handle on a 1998 VW Jetta GL

First of all, your door locks do not have as many tumblers in them as your ignition switch. A key cut for your ignition switch will make your door locks work, but a key cut to fit your door locks will not make your ignition switch work.

Besides, I have a much more economical and easier way to do it.Take your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and proof that you own the car (Registration papers will work for both) to your local VW dealer or certified locksmith, and they can get the key code from the manufacturer and cut you a new key.

I broke my key for my car and it was the only one... i would like to know how to put the new ignition in

If the ignition switch is OK remove the switch and take it to a locksmith. They can simply make you another key (s) much cheaper than a new switch. It's about 99% that you can check the repair manual for your year & model vehicle at your local library. The job isn't real difficult.

What is the procedure to replace the ignition switch on a 2000 dodge caravan?

The top and bottom plastic steering column covers need to be removed with a Torx screwdriver. The tilt lever, if it exists, must be unscrewed to remove them. Then, remove the tamper-proof Torx screws to remove the entire plastic ignition switch assembly, including key cylinder. The metal cylinder part can now be removed from the ignition switch. If you need to remove the internal keyed part from the cylinder, the key must be in a specific position, and a hammer must be used at a specific spot. Most locksmiths have access to this specific procedure, and/or will do it for $10 or so. Otherwise you can simply replace the cylinder, but that means the key will be different than the doors.

Key is broken off in the ignition switch

You'll have to take the whole ignition piece out in order to remove the broken key. I apparently jammed a bunch paper clips in my parents van when i was a kid and they had to take it to some place to get the whole thing removed.

Key for ignition

Ignition Switch
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering wheel.
  3. As necessary, remove all under dash panels in order to gain access to the ignition switch.
  4. As necessary, lower the steering column to gain working clearance.
  5. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connectors.
  6. Remove the ignition switch retaining screws from the studs. Disengage the ignition switch from switch rod. Remove the switch from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Position the lock cylinder in the LOCK position.
  2. To set the switch, position a wire in the opening in the outer surface of the switch through its positions until the wire drops down into the slot.
The slot is in the bottom of the switch where the rod must be inserted to allow full movement through the switch positions.
  1. Position the ignition switch on the column studs and over the actuating rod. Torque the retaining nuts to 40-64 inch lbs. (4.5-7.2 Nm).
  2. Remove the wire from the slot in the housing. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
