Clubman 09 would not idle, Unless i unplug the air flow sensor.

Hi Mohini,
I believe you have a defective air flow sensor. When you unplug, it then runs on fail safe.

Also when the car is warm and you turn key to start it won't idle on its own, And it tends to fluctuate when it's idling. Cold start is fine


What make model an year vehicle ? Could be a mass air flow sensor problem , ETC - engine coolant sensor , crank sensor , idle air control valve problem . There are a few thing's that can cause this problem , unless your prepaired to replace all the sensors on the vehicle , suggest you have it diagnosed at a qualified repair shop that has a professional type scan tool . So sensor data can be analyzed . Unless of course you have a scan tool that can do that . It just cut's down on the guess work !

1996 t bird 4.6l idles up and down


If it idles up and down real high, its the throttle body sensor. If it's a low up and down idle and runs rough it is mass air flow meter. If you unplug the mass airflow meter and it will just low idle (no up & down) then the mass air flow meter is bad.

99 Eclipse 2.4 cid idles erratically and eventually stalls. Unplug the air flow meter and idle quality gets much better and does not stall. Does this mean I have a defective air flow meter? Engine codes...


couple of possible problems

first thing i would check is to make sure air intake hose between Mass air flow sensor and intake doesn't have any cracks holes make sure clamps are tight

secondly check for vacuum leaks carb cleaner works great for this spray around intake gaskets throttle body fuel injectors vacuum lines when spraying u notice change in idle (if idle picks up or stubles) that where your problem is example you spray around intake gasket and idle picks up you have bad intake gasket

third thing is to try and clean the mass air flow sensor they make special cleaner for this (u can use carb cleaner for this but it can leave residue on sensor and damage it so it not recomended)

my best guess for you with all three o codes is you have a vacuum leak somewhere

Wont idle right.Idles at 2000 rpm then drops to 900 or less then usually will stall.If i unplug the mass air sensor while it is running nothing changes. Does this mean it is bad? Thanks,John


MAF concerns the proper mixture of fuel, not the idle speed, so it is most likely all right (if it wasn't, your car would die before it reached 2000 RPM's). Idle speed is controlled by a small motor, generally mounted around the throttle plate. This is controlled by a computer, which judges idle requirements by the input from crank or camshaft position sensors. Make sure that all of your sensors are clean, and in proper operation.

check you throttle positioning sensor, also check your mass air flow sensor, by unplugging while your motor is running if idle returns to normal that may be the prob. hope i could help

hi there, when air flow unplugged, ecu goes into limp home mode ,a back up if something dies whilst driving. it sounds as if your used mass air flow sensor is faulty , they are more fragile than they look, one knock and these early fine wire models are gone. i replaced many when i worked at a volvo dealership a few years ago. hope this helps, and good luck.

  • The PCM doesn't even see the O2 sensor until engine temp has reached operating temp,the vehicle goes from open loop when cold,to closed loop when warm,where the PCM uses the O2 sensor to measure the rich/lean of the exhaust content,and from that,adjust fuel richness to achieve 14.7 to 1 air/fuel ratio.So when cold,the O2 sensor is out of the picture anyways.When unplugging sensors,it can be deceitful.The PCM has a program whereas,if a critical sensor (such as the mass air flow) is somehow damaged and out of the picture,the PCM will substitue a generic value that will allow the engine to stay running.So,by unplugging the MAF,it did try to run on it's own better than plugged in,there's the problem area.The vehicle is running better with the MAF unplugged,because the MAF is likely bad,and the PCM is substituting it's generic value when it IS unplugged.Something to recheckThe PROM update is a newer program for the PCM,and likely won't fix it unless the PCM is bad.I would try a good used PCM as a last or later resort,because i have seen my fair share of defective PCM's too.I have taken some PCM's apart,and found capacitors that had gone bad and leaked all over the circuit board,mostly Honda and Mitsubishi and Chrysler though.Good luck,keep me posted.
