Hi this is a safety feature that they have fitted ti these cars, it goes into limp mode if there is something wrong with the gearbox, it will get slower over time till you can only do about 30mph, the only way you can find out what the problem is will be to take it to a main dealer, it normally is 3rd gear fault when it goes into limp mode, or the position selector is at fault as these are electronic you can only have them done at the main dealer, you will need to get it looked at as soon as possible as you could cause further damage to the engine and gearbox...hope this helps

looks like a sensor has gone or been misread if you stop the engine for awhile like for 20 min and then start up and it runs ok, would think cam sensor has overheated, you will still be able to get home as its in limp mode just means there is no advanced timing this gets turned off. so if it does stay on you will be fine to get home.

Is in limp mode and wont go above 35 mph

Get an OBDII reader and connect to see what error codes you are getting. Limp mode can be caused by many different things including problems with the transmission.

Runs cool for about 15 miles then it gets hot(220) so i turn it off to let it cool about a half gallon of water is gone

220 to 230 deg. F is actually normal for the 1998 Cadillac Deville. If it goes to 250 deg. F or even 260 deg. F it goes into a limp mode where fresh air is pumped into 1/2 of the cylinders to preserve the engine up to 40 mi. of travel (in the case that a radiator fan isn't working or coolant has completely leaked out of the system).

If a half gallon of water is gone in the system and you keep losing it, there is a leak in the system say in the water pump o-ring or the radiator, or a hose.

Goes into limp mode computer saysimobiliser fault

The best $100 dollars I ever spent car repairing is a OBDII scanner. This lets you diagnose your own problem. Even if you can't fix it you can direct your mechanic. I am not familiar with code 1630 on your Mercedes.

Sprinter gear selector

This is the gear linkages. It is a cable operated system to allow the gear lever to be dash mounted.

They are a common fault. The parts are about £65 from Mercedes (dealer only part) and unless you know what you are doing you can expect about 2 - 3 hours labour charge, though there are no special tools involved.

They average about 60,000 miles, though the replacements tend to be better.
