RESETTING THE SWITCH

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  2. Ensure that there is no fuel leaking in the engine compartment, along any of the lines or at the tank. There should be no odor of fuel as well.
  3. If no leakage and/or odor is apparent, reset the switch by pushing the reset button on the top of the switch. NOTE: You may need to pull the carpet down and away from the instrument panel in order to access the switch. Fig. 2: The Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) switch — when an impact occurs, the ball breaks loose from the magnet and strikes the target plate which opens the electrical contacts 89685g06.gif

  4. Cycle the ignition switch from the ON to OFF positions several times, allowing five seconds at each position, to build fuel pressure within the system.
  5. Again, check the fuel system for leaks. There should be no odor of fuel as well.
  6. If there is no leakage and/or odor of fuel, it is safe to operate the vehicle. However, it is recommended that the entire system be checked by a professional, especially if the vehicle was in an accident severe enough to trip the inertia switch.

What all safety switches are on a 1996 ford thunderbird

I think the only safety switch in the starting circuit (which just engages the starter motor to crank the engine over) would be the neutral safety switch. But if you have the anti-theft system, that will inhibit starting while honking the horn and flashing the headlights, too.
There is an inertia switch in the wiring to the fuel pump which could trip with a large bump, but it would only shut off the fuel pump, and not affect the starting circuit.

The neutral safety switch wiring would be found in the wiring to the Transmission Range sensor, which also needs checking.

No voltage to fuel pump 2002 saburban

vehicles have a safty device that kills the fuel pump in case of a roll-over accident so the fuel will not be poured on to the car and ignite. also, this fuel pump kill switch is used when you are going to remove the fuel pump to de-pressurize the fuel line by cranking the engine while the fuel pump safety switch is off. you can restore the power back to the fuel pump by resetting the fuel pump safety (kill) switch. some are located in the trunk, by the fender well, behind the carpet. some are located inside the kick panel where the front passenger sits. check your motor manuel for that vehicle or ask a parts person at the dealership for the location of the safety switch for the fuel pump.

Fuel safety switch location or other reasons it won't start after crash.

Generally speaking, only Ford products have a safety switch or inertia switch for the fuel system. This includes some Mazda models.
I would start with the basics and check for power to the coil and the fuel pump relay.

How to reset fuel safety switch

There is no fuel safety switch on this car. They only had those on much older cars. With computers controlling cars these days they don't need to have an switch...the computer just shuts the fuel off in the event of an accident.

If the inertia switch will not work and keeps popping then you will need to replace the fuel pump.

My vehicle sometimes will not start but after sitting for 10 minutes will, i suspect a dirty nuetral safety switch as this started happening shortly after the cover by my automatic shifter cracked

no you have no problem with the neutral safety switch . This would not let it start at all or it would start all the time . You have a problem with fuel somewhere. try to cycle your ignition switch a few times if it doesnt start on off on off and see if it starts .. if so you might be needing a fuel pump change or fuel filter . thanks Jerry holler if you need further help
