Question about 1998 Cadillac DeVille

3 Answers

1999 Cadillac Deville, V8. the interior heating/cooling fan does not work. No matter what temp you set the climate control at the fan will not come on. Will not come on if you override to high or low fan speed either. Every once and awhile, the fan will come on for about 30 seconds then go off and never go back on. At this point hasn't come on for days.

2 possible causes for that:
1 - the blower fan isn't getting power - the commands controlling it are faulty or there's a bad contact in the wiring.
2 - the fan itself is faulty and must be replaced
To find which is it and fix it you must dismantle the dash completely. This is a big job that, if you don't have experience in working with car electrics, it's better to leave to a shop.

could this have anything to do with any fuses or maxifuse?

  • Azrael SRL Jul 08, 2010

Highly unlikely, if a fuse would have been the cause you would have seen a lot more faults. If you want to see for yourself just check all 3 fuse boxes for loose or fried ones: 1-underneath dash near hood release; 2-underneath dash below glove compartment; 3- underneath hood on passenger side ,just beneath windshield wiper ,called maxi fuses, there are labels on the inside of fuse box cover with fuse location and function.
In your case most likely the problem is with the blower fan motor  - because sometimes the spark plug wires are hanging near the blower motor they are inducing high voltage spikes in the wioring that are frying the control module. As i said

Check for voltage at the blower motor it's self, with a test light, we know your blower motor resister is good or fan would have never come on again, I think pretty sure the blower motor on your caddy, sit on the fire wall right in the center under the hood, will only have one wire going to it, if it has voltage, replace blower motor.

OK. I have a 1997 Cadillac Deville and a 1990 Cadillac Deville. I had this same problem on the 1990 Deville.

I took it to an auto electric repair shop and they proceded to replace the fan and the relay (fan control module) which they said goes bad 'all the time.'

It was getting near winter and I needed to have the fan working for th defrost heat on the windshield, here in Pennsylvania, where the winters are wicked.

Anyway, a few hundred dollars later, the problem was fixed, and it's been working for 2 years now without any problems.

I understand that the circuitry for the blower motor is about the same from 1990 through 1990s so I'm willing to say that you should have this service performed on your vehicle at a shop of your choosing.

Good luck to you.

It may seem expensive to spend a few hundred on a Cadillac to fix this problem, however, it seems to me that on a vehicle that is over $40,000 new, that it would be worth a few hundred to have that essential part fixed right.

I have a 1999 cadillac deville. My cooling fan is not turning on. My car is over heating. Is there a connection?

There is nothing really in the water-related part of the system that has anything to do with the fan. The hoses, thermostat, heater core, etc. are simply a conduit to move the water through the engine to provide cooling. The fan is the crucial element to avoiding overheating. While the car is in motion, air flows through the radiator, cooling the coolant down and removing the excess heat. Once you stop, however, or get in a stop-and-go environment, there is limited airflow through the radiator to provide this heat reduction. That is where the fan comes into play. What makes the fan work depends upon what you are asking the vehicle to do. Testing the fan circuitry is rather simple if you understand a few things. The fan only needs to run to cool the engine if the engine coolant gets above a certain temperature (usually about 220F). The fan will be ordered on and run until the coolant drops to about 180-190 (thermostat temp). The confusion is that the thermostat has something to do with turning the fan on. The thermostat only controls the flow of water through the system. It stays closed until the water temp reaches it setpoint (usually 180-190F), then open to allow water to flow through the engine. There is a coolant temperature sensor, usually installed near the point where the thermostat is, and it sends coolant temperature information to the ECM. The ECM uses this information to control fuel-air mixture and to control the cooling fan to operate when needed. The fan and the fan relay can be tested very easily by simply turning on the car's A/C. Even if your A/C unit isn't working, simply putting the dash controls to an A/C position, will automatically power up the cooling fans, since the A/C requires CONSTANT airflow thru the font of the engine to maintain cooling. If the fans don't work in the A/C position, then the problem is not likely to be the coolant temperature sensor. It is more likely to be a fan relay or the fan itself.

The heater only works some times

Cooling fans are on a thermostat and should only come on when needed. Climate control also only engages the interior fan when it is needed. Not sure if this helps but the question was a little vague, sorry if I missed the mark.

I am not getting warm air in my 1999 escalade

I would say either blend door issues or a vacuum control valve, heater control valve or a vacuum hose to the heater system is leaking. I would start to suggest. You are correct in checking the blend door. A computer scan should tell you what temp the climate control thinks it is in the passenger compartment. It may be a thermostat problem giving the climate control a false reading. Your blend door is controlled by a servo motor under the dash. You can remove the servo and watch to see if it moves when you change the temp setting from heat to cool. Also, you should be able to manually move the door to the heat position and see if you get heat.

'96 cadillac deville has no air.cond./heat

Unfortunately for you ( i had the same problem) The A/C compressor HAS to be in working order on these cars or else all heck breaks out with the climate control.

If it's a nice car, get a new compressor installed. If it's borderline- get rid of the car.

I paid 2200 to Cadillac to fix the A/C and climate control only to have the transmission fail in my '93.

I dumped the car soon thereafter....

Just brought used 94 cadillac deville ac works great but no heat

This is the the Cadillac Climate Control operates. When you press AUTO, the system will automatically maitain DESIRED temp . The A/C compressor will operate ALL THE TIME on AUTO. Don't want the a/c compressor to operate, PRESS " ECON". Air delivery will NOT be DE-HUMIFIED, nor will it cool, only warm,. Hope this helps.

1999 cadillac deville air wont work

There's a blower motor (fan) under the hood and up against the firewall near the center of the car that takes some work to remove. It has gone out in the last 2 of my 4 Cadillacs. Turns out if you're not real careful with the positioning of the spark plug wires they will brush up against it, and if one of them gets cracked or brittle it will "arc" and short out the blower motor. The a/c compressor should still come on (you'll hear a click when it engages) but you won't get any air blowing into the cabin, hot or cold.

The part was like $200 stock (year 2000 prices) and it took about an hour to remove it. My Caddy at that time had this damn strut bar going across the engine bay which we eventually removed to get to the blower motor.
