Hot engine possible radiator fan problem?

I drive for a little while and the check gauges light comes on and my temp gauge is a little high. But when I am driving at a higher speed the light goes off? Does that mean the fan is not working??

That's a definite possibility. Check if your a/c turns the fan on. If it does then the fan part is ok at idle anyway If the temp goes a little high, that can trigger the check gauges light. When you go faster, the regular air currents cool off the radiator instead of the fan.So you may have something there.

Good luck in fixing this problem.

Radiator fans not coming on. replaced thermostat and cooling sensor

Hi Bill, is the engine actually getting hot enough for the fans to come on? if the engine does have overheating problem (but you say the temp gauge reads normal) then i would check the operation of the engine temp switch, there are two, one for the gauge and one for the fans.

My 97 hyundai Accent I can drive it 100 miles and electric cooling fan doesn't come on ,doesn't get hot

Not necessarily. The vehicle, in motion, has enough air flow through the radiator that the fan is usually not needed. The fan will run if the vehicle sits and idles for a while and the coolant temp rises since there is no air flow through the radiator. If you are worried about fan operation, there are two things to check. The fans will ALWAYS come on if the A/C is turned on. That is because the fans pll air through the A/C coil in front of the radiator. Air must flow through that at all times or pressure in the A/C lines will get too high. So test that circuit simply by running the engine and turning on the A/C. If the fans run, that part works. Now turn the A/C off. Let the engine run until the temp gauge gets to around 200-220 degrees F. The fan should come on about this time and run until the temp drops to about 190. This cycle will continue to keep the coolant from getting too hot. If the temp gauge gets into the red area and the fan has not come on, shut down the vehicle immediately to prevent engine overheating, and then troubleshoot that portion of the fan circuit.

Temp gauge spikes to hot

Sounds like you have air in the coolant system.. did you bleed the system after you replaced all this?.. did you replace the thermostat? You might add a comment about why you replaced these things .. and how you know they were failing>

I have 1989 s10 blazer with a 4.3. I have replaced the water pump, thermostat & belt,it still gets hot by the dash gauge it says the temp is 225 is that normal temp?

The normal temp should be between 195 and 220 degrees. 225 is not bad but does seem a little on the high side. Do you see this temp at idel and then it cools down as you drive or do you see this temp all the time? If you see it all the time after the engine is fully warmed up it may be the gauge is a little off or the trump sensor may be a little off. If you see it at idle and then it cools down while driving than you possible have a bad fan clutch. Another possibility is that you have bunch of debris that has built up in front of the radiator on the outside. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

My temp gauge goes to the third line before fans come on and only the low fan comes on. I already replaced thermostat, engine coolant temp. sensor and radiator flush... any idea why high fans dont come on...

CHECK COOLANT FAN FUSES AND RELAYS. CHECK COOLANT LEVEL.MAKE SURE ITS NOT TOO LOW BECAUSE IF COOLANT TOO LOW . BY NO COOLANT AROUND OR COOLANT SENSOR NOT SUBMERGED IN COOLANT COOLING FANS WONT TURN ON.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50/50 ANTIFREEZE AND WATER. CHECK FOR CLAPSE RADIATOR HOSES.CHECK RADIATOR HOSE AT WATER PUMP.IF HOSE LOOK CLAPSE REPLACE IT AND BLEED COOLANT SYSTEM.IF EVERY THING HAS BEEN DONE YOU NEED ENGINE BLOCK FLUSHED OUT.HEATER CORE ALSO COULD BE STOPPED UP.A VERY HIGH MILEAGE ENGINE WILL OVER HEAT.OLD ENGINE LOSES COMPRESSION AND HORSE POWER.PUTTING MORE LOAD ON THE OLD ENGINE WILL MAKE IT OVER HEAT.IF COOLANT LEVEL IS LOW.BLEED COOLANT SYSTEM.START THE ENGINE LET IT IDLE FEW MINUTES WATCH THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE.WHEN TEMPERATURE START RISING.TURN OFF THE ENGINE LET IT SET FOR 20 MINUTES.TAKE A LARGE RAG PLACE OVER RADIATOR CAP ON COOLANT EXPANSION TANK SLOWLY OPEN RADIATOR CAP JUST A LITTLE TO RELEASE A LITTLE PRESSURE AT A TIME.DONT OPEN CAP RAPIDLY OR YOU WILL GET SCALDED.ONCE THE RADIATOR CAP REMOVED.IF COOLANT LOW ADD MORE COOLANT IN THE THE COOLANT EXPANSION UNTIL YOU GET TO THE COLD MARK.REPEAT THIS PROCEDURE START ENGINE LET IT RUN UNTIL TEMP GAUGE START CLIMBING A BIT DONT LET CAR RUN TO OVER HEAT JUST IDLE UNTIL TEMP JUST START TO RISE.THEN YOU TURN OFF ENGINE. WAIT 20 MINUTES.THEN USE LARGE RAG OPEN RADIATOR CAP LITTLE AT A TIME. DO THIS PROCEDURE UNTIL THE COOLANT IN THE EXPANSION TANK STOP DROPPING. THEN ALL THE AIR IS BLEED OUT THE COOLANT.WHEN COOLANT LEVEL STOP DROPPING, WHEN YOU DRIVE CAR AROUND.AND TURN OFF ENGINE.WHEN ENGINE OFF CAR SET FOR A WHILE KEEP CHECK ON THE COOLANT LEVEL IN COOLANT EXPANSION TANK. THE COOLANT LEVEL SHOULD BE AT THE COLD MARK IN THE EXPANSION TANK.MAKE SURE COOLANT IS IN THE EXPANSION TANK.IF NOT AIR WILL DRAW IN COOLANT SYSTEM. CAUSING ENGINE TO OVER HEAT.IF BLEEDING AIR OUT THE COOLANT SYSTEM DONT HELP AND COOLANT FANS DONT TURN ON YOU HAVE PCM PROBLEMS.

Temp gauge goes high. Radiator leak just the

It could well be a faulty thermostat- test or replace same.
Could also be a blocked radiator core, - check coolant or airflow is not restricted,
Ensure any radiator leaks are repaired,
Ensure coolant level is correct, without airlocks - bleed as necessary on re-fill,
Check operation of cooling fan - ensure fan runs at appropriate engine temperature - if not check sensor switch and associated relay operation.
Thermostat is located at the end of top radiator hose where it connects to engine housing.

1996 engine coolant problem

you can open the radiator cap before starting your engine and let it worms up and you can see by looking in to the rad if you have circulation maybe you will have to rev engine just a little if the new thermostat work it will circulate godd and check to make sure fan does come on new sensors but fan may be the problem be cautious as it gets hot . and also make sure there is no air in the system with the cap off and little rev if air is present it should come out good luck
