Question about 2002 Buick Rendezvous

1 Answer

We have spent over $5000 in the past year fixing VARIOUS issues w/my 2002 Rendezvous (it was a fantastic car PRIOR to rolling over 100,000 miles) and the "Service Engine Soon" light has NEVER gone off for more than 3 days no matter what we fix or do. It's always some new code, or a code for things we've already fixed. I live in Texas and I'm beginning to fear that it won't pass the inspection this year and I won't be able to drive it. Any suggestions? (Other than getting rid of it, because I can't afford a car payment right now...)

As you have already serviced it, reset the ECU by pulling the large fuse (check diagram for ECU fuse) and/or taking the battery leads off for at least 30-60mins. Reconnect and drive a while. This should reset the ECU and no more engine service light :)

Testimonial: "Unfortunately the problems were way beyond that. (Even though it WAS a great idea to try!) There was a never-ending list of problems with this car. After wasting 3 more years & who knows how much more money we finally sold the piece of junk for $500 to a guy that had to tow it away from the mechanic! Sorry this post took so long. Forgot I even had this account till I received an email!"

That transmission is about 13 years old &
at the end of it's lifetime

If it has not had the fluid changed every 3 years
since new, just pull it & rebuild it

Do 2002 pontiac grand am se has timing belt or timing chain and at what miles it has to be changed

Hi
The car has a timing belt - [ rubber] and should be changed at 100,000 miles - each 100,000 miles = new belt.
To save problems many people do this at about 90,000 miles and it is also best to change the water pump while you're in there.

Best of it.

At how many miles do I need a tune up?

It depends on the engine you have. If you do not have a 100,000 mile sparkplug then replace plugs every 40,000 to 50,000 miles. Or at 2 to 3 year intervals whichever comes first.

Other maintenence requires shorter times. Oil changes and filters 3000 to 5000 miles. Air filters about 12,000 miles. If you have a distributor cap and rotor about 30,000 to 40,000 miles depending on wear.
Check antifreeze strength, change antifreeze every 3 years. Always have axles and wheel bearings checked at least every 24,000 miles. Lube door hinges annually, hood release, trunklid hinges, etc.

Odometer not working

Get rid of this car. There is a design flaw in that the timing chain does not get oil and will eventually fail. Some failed in as little as 20,000 miles. Mine failed at 78,000 miles which is real common. I just read on here someone was lucky to get over 100,000 miles on theirs but do you really think you will be that lucky?
