YOU HAVE TO REMOVE SKID PLATE AND DRIVE SHAFT. THE EARLY MODEL YOU HAD TO RAISE THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION WITH A FLOOR JACK UNDER THE TRANSMISSION AND REMOVE THE TRANSMISSION CROSSMEMBER FOR ACCESS STARTER MOTOR BOLTS.ALSO REMOVE STARTER HEAT SHIELD.

How do I change the starter?

Sometimes with american cars you need to get creative. Have you removed the bottom splash guards and tried to pull it out of the bottom? It does come out. Perhaps you need to disconnect or move another piece of equipment. Without seeing the car i cant get more specific.

Spent the better part of two hours pulling this hose out of a customers car. Had to drop the alternator and starter motor to get enough room to pull it out over the gearbox. did you pull the inlet manifold or drop the alt and starter like i did?

Trying to replace a starter.isit easy enough to do myself?

The starter is in a miserable place to reach but not impossible. To get more room, I remove the radiator cooling fan, just remove four bolt headed screws (7mm heads), one on each corner of the plastic fan housing, and disconnect the power wire and it pulls up and out. Make sure to disconnect the ground cable from your battery, then disconnect the battery cable and fusible links connected to the starter solenoid. Then disconnect the solenoid activating wire (purple) if you can, if not, you can disconnect that wire after the starter can be moved around to gain access to the purple wire. Remove the starter mounting bolts and any bracket that may be attached to the starter and it will come right out. The starter is located on the front, of the engine block, mounted at the rear on the bell-housing flange. Hope this helps!

Starter appears to be bad...battery cable post on the starter free spins. Starter does not engage. My problem is I can't see how to get the starter out. There isn't enough room to pull the starter out.

if it is a s-10 with a 4.3 you need to drop the exhaust at the manifold flange and at the cat converter then remove the support brackets it will then come down enough to disconnect the wiring
good luck

What do i have to do to take out the starter in a 1991 s10 with a 4.3 motor i have already taken out both bolts but not enough room

I think this one has the cover on the bottom of the transmission. There will be a couple of support bars that are bolted to it as well. Remove those support bars and the lower cover and you'll have enough room to drop the starter down.

Bellhousing, driveshaft, crossmember yes. BUT, are we talking overdrive auto or 5 speed manual? P.S. unless you've pulled a tranny before, take it to an expert.

I can't get Chevy K1500 starter removed to replace.

Make sure all your wires are off. Push the starter forward, turn it to the right, and pull it down. It will come out. It don't seem like there's room, but there is. Good luck. PHil
