Question about 1993 Buick Roadmaster

2 Answers

On my 1994 Buick Roadmaster After a momentary short to ground at the fusebox I am getting no charge. My voltmeter on the dashboard is only on a little under 12 v where it is usually around 14 v. Is there some kind of fuse or fuseable link to my alternator or did this short simply cause the alternator to fail??

The alternator's built in voltage regulator is fried, or the diode is damaged both of which mean a new alternator is in order.

Get a lifetime warrantied one for the least amount of trouble with quality control.

Good luck on this one.

When trouble shooting this type of problem, always start at the source and work your way back. The first step is to confirm the alternator is working properly.
More than likely one or more of the diodes have failed because the electrical system was shorted out. This can be confirmed by measuring the output of the alternator (B+ it’s the wire bolted on the back of the alternator) with a volt meter. It should read above 13.5 volts even as high as 14.8, you can also take it to an auto parts store and get it tested for N/C.

My situation is that where I am now I have minimal tools available to me. So if there is a fuse that can be replaced I can likely do that, if not I will have to get a tow truck and get it towed home. I can troubleshoot the alternator from there and in fact would not have even bothered asking on here if the vehicle was home. I am far away enough that I don't think it would get me there with no charging going on.

BTW it is a 1993 Roadmaster, I noticed I had a typo there saying 1994

So if you know of the location of a fuse or fuseable link, if either exists, that is what I really need to know at the moment

    Thanx

press the helpful button and check links below, it is a 1993 manual, should be the same.
one fuse panel on that vehicle. It's on the driver side end of dash, you have to open the driver door to get at it. The box is under the hood, labeled relay center I believe. http://www.vadengmpp.com/owners-manual/buick/1993-Buick-RoadMaster.pdf

1994 buick roadmaster battery drain pulled fuses all . battery still drawing 11 amps ????

I would check the starter and the alternator, also check the battery cables and connections nd check any circuit with a fuse of more than ten amps for a short to ground. Sounds like you might have some bad diodes in the alternator, though.

No heat in my 1994 roadmaster wagon i replaced

If you have the Auto temp control; and you have checked the coolant level then you may need to replace the module that is under the dashboard on the right side footwell,. this is a common problem on these cars. When you remove the plastic under dash panel, look up and there is a module in the duct for the heat that determines the temp so the Climate control works correctly. I pulled mine out of a junkyard car and saved about 80 bucks.

1994 Buick Roadmaster won't divert heat to defroster or floor

There is a vacuum line that's plastic on the passenger side back near the firewall. Sometime they have a little black ball looking thing (vacuum canister) that the vacuum line hooks to. Look for vacuum leaks in that area. That will cause the problem you described.
