External if it's like my 1979 Honda. Internal if like the following information:
Slave Cylinder on 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Detach the master cylinder assembly from the actuator cylinder by disconnecting the hydraulic line.
  3. Remove the transaxle assembly, as outlined earlier in this section.
  4. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder from the transaxle. Fig. 1: Clutch actuator cylinder assembly mounting Is the clutch slave cylinder internal or external - 91147g02.gif
    To install:
  5. Lubricate the inside diameter of the bearing with clutch bearing lubricant GM part no. 12345777 or equivalent.
  6. Install the actuator cylinder in the transaxle, then install the transaxle assembly.
  7. Connect the master cylinder-to-actuator hydraulic line.
  8. Bleed the hydraulic system, as outlined later in this section.
  9. If removed, install the air intake duct.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.

SOURCE: Removal of slave clutch master cylinder

The hydraulic cylinder is in the bell housing. When you separate the motor and tranny, you will see it as a unit with the throw-out bearing. Take the hydraulic line off before you start. You will have to bleed it when you are done.

SOURCE: clutch slave cylinder

Yes, it is located on the passenger's side of the car at the front lower side of the transmission.
You will need the following tools: 12mm and 14mm socket. The slave cylinder could be bolted to the bell housing using either size bolt head.
A 14mm and 17mm open end wrench. The hose to the slave cylinder could be found with either size.
a 10mm combination wrench for the bleeder screw. A small set of vice grip pliers.
Removal and installation instructions for the slave cylinder:
1.Take the small set of vice grip pliers and adjust them to where they just barely close down on the slave cylinder hose. Just enough to pinch off the flow of fluid but not damage the hose.
2. Using the 14mm or 17mm open ended wrench, break the hose loose from the slave cylinder, turning it in a counter clockwise direction. Make sure you have the wrench squarely on the fitting to avoid rounding it off.
3. using either the 12 or 14mm socket, remove the two bolts which hold the slave cylinder to the bell housing.
4. At this point with the slave cylinder lose, have the replacement part near by, make sure you have the copper crush ring with it.
5. Holding the hose, rotate the slave cylinder counter clockwise, spinning it off the hose.
The replacement part should have a small metal rod and rubber cover which retains it to the slave cylinder. Make sure to remove the old copper crush ring and put the new one on the end of the hose. If the part did not come with one, reuse the old one. Spin the new part on the hose and place it back on the bell housing, making sure that the rod fits into the steel linkage which projects out from inside the transmission. There is a shallow hole which the rod should fit in. Holding the part in place, don't try to tighten the hose yet, screw both bolts in by hand and tighten them. Make sure you have them both in before you go tightening anything.
6. Tighten the hose, a good snug pull is all that is needed. you don't have to crank down on the line.
Now you can remove the pliers.
7. At this point you will need the assistance of another person. Have them sit in the car, you top off the clutch master cylinder (the one which has just one resevoir) with DOT 3 brake fluid. See if you can find a small container to catch the fluid in, or just use an oil drain pan. With you stationed under the car with the 10mm wrench on the bleeder screw ready to open it up in a counter clockwise direction, have your friend ready to pump the clutch pedal.
READY?
HAVE THEM PUMP THE PEDAL AND TELL THEM TO "HOLD IT" They should keep the pedal on the floor while you open the bleeder screw up.
Some fluid and air may or may not come out the first time you open the bleeder. Close it and tell them to pump the pedal again. They need to pump the pedal at least 5 times and them tell them to "Hold It" again, holding it to the floor. Don't open the bleeder until they have the pedal to the floor.
Open the bleeder and then close it. Repeat the procedure until you see just fluid and no air coming out.. After the first three times you bleed it, check the clutch master fluid level again. Avoid running the reservoir empty other wise you will be bleeding the cluch for quite a while.
Brake fluid will attack paint so if you spill any on the paint, pour water on it and it will neutralize it. DO NOT GET WATER IN YOUR BRAKE FLUID!!!!
If everything goes well, by the fourth or fifth time you have had them pumped the pedal, you will notice the slave cylinder is pushing the release arm and the person in the car should be feeling a normal clutch pedal along with the "pedal free play" being roughly 1/2 " from the top.

No its internal meaning that its in the bell housing.The bell housing is bolted to the gearbox to hous the clutch befor being bolted to the engine.It has no seal on it.So when your slave cylinder leaks,The fluid drips from the bell housing.And the only way to get at it is to remove the gearbox.

It sounds like the clutch is not disengaging when depressed. What is the year make and model? It most likely has a hydraulic clutch. Many vehicles have the clutch slave cylinder inside the bell housing of the transmission. This means that the fluid line to the slave cylinder was removed to remove the transmission. If a new slave cylinder was installed when the clutch was replaced (this is a good idea to do when servicing a clutch with a bell housing internal slave cylinder) then the system will need to be bled to remove air from the system and allow the clutch disengagement to function properly.

I just replaced my master clutch cylinderin my 2008 lancer a week ago,paid 400. Now they're saying its the slave cylinder and they have to pull the transmission out and get deep into it and...


You could have either an internal [concentric] clutch slave cylinder or an external slave cylinder depending on which transmission Mitsubishi used for your car. The problem is that automobile manufacturers all source parts from wherever they can and from each other.
The video shows an external and easy [relatively inexpensive to replace slave cylinder. An external slave cylinder shouldn't cost more than $40 in parts and less than one hour of labor to replace. A look under your car may save you lots of money. Also look for a reliable independent repair shop rather than the dealer to save money.
Then there is the centric slave cylinder that fits around the transmission input shaft [requiring transmission removal to replace].

If you have this type of slave cylinder, you are in for close to $100 in parts and 5 to 6 hours of labor.

Should be mounted on the side of the transmission. Follow the line down from the master cylinder.

Replace slave cylinder


okay, lets hope the clutch slave is installed correctly, is this slave internal or external. in other words can the clutch slave(the part that pushes clutch fork) be replaced with out pulling the transmission?
what year,make and model is this car? did you open the clutch line? how did you bleed the clutch?

slave cylinder is at wheels or brakes most are internal meaning you have to remove brake drum to access them .slave cylinder on clutch usuall external

In spite of clutch pushed in all the way, the gears will not shift into any gear. Any ideas of how this problem might be solved?


Your clutch is not working. It is a hydraulic system just like brakes. If the fluid has leaked out , or gotten low enough to allow air in the system , the clutch will not work. The system can be refilled and bled of air , however , most likely it will just leak again. The leak can be in the master cylinder , which is easily replaceable , or it could be in the slave cylinder , which is a bigger job.
Many modern cars have an internal slave cylinder which means it is inside of the transmission bell housing , and unfortunately , the transmission has to be removed from the car to replace the part.
Some cars have the slave cylinder mounted externally which is an easier fix.
I CHECKED A PARTS SUPPLIER and found that if your car has the 3.0 L engine , the slave cylinder looks to be the externally mounted version , which is good news.

Nissan Maxima 2000 - 5 speed will not go into gear and the clutch gets stuck once pressed in. Is this strictly a clutch problem or could be a transmission problem also.


Sounds like your clutch slave cylinder is bad. It's only a minor, external problem, not an internal transmission problem.

Having problems with the clutch in my 1998 Ford Ranger. There is no freeplay, and it is very difficult to shift. Do I need to adjust the clutch? If so, how do I adjust it?


The clutch is not adjustable,it is a fluid clutch.It has to be a leak,or the slave cylinder,and,or, the master cylinder are bad,It does not have to be leaking to be bad,but it is one of the two.Rate please,thank you.

YES U DO THE SLAVE CYLINDER IS ATTACHED TO THE CLUTCH RELEASE BEARING.
