Question about Dodge Stratus

2 Answers

I am working on a 2002 stratus with the 2.4 engine. It has a very rough idle at idle. New plugs wires and cleaned throttle body and sensors. Surge gets worse when put in gear. No current dtc's or stored dtc's

Check these things out to fix the rough idle on your 2002 Dodge Stratus:

1) Vacuum leak
2) EGR gasket
3) Primary ignition
4) Secondary ignition
5) Clogged fuel filter
6) Clogged air filter
7) Weak fuel pump
8) Water in fuel
9) Incorrect spark plugs or spark gap
10) IAC clogged
11) Carbon deposits in throttle body
12) Worn timing chain/belt
13) Worn cam lobes
14) Cams out of time
15) Bad oxygen sensor

I would start out by replacing the oxygen sensor and see if that corrects the problem. If you have checked all of these steps and it still idles bad then I would try resetting the computer

Well, the 2.4L engine is a 4 cylinder engine so I would expect the idle to be rougher than the 6 cylinder cousins used in this vehicle in 2002.

I have a 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais 4 cylinder quad 4 that has the same problem.

If you have no hard dtc's or stored dtc's it tells me that the engine is working within specifications, as far as the manufacturer is concerned.

Therefore, I would try to live with it for as long as you can.

Sometimes, dtc's are not triggered and the engine runs terribly, as in the case of a coil pack or coil that is going bad.

The Dodge Stratus, like the Cutlass Calais, with a 4 cylinder engine is designed to get high gas mileage but the engines unfortunately are not as refined as v-6 or v-8 engines which are guaranteed not to vibrate at idle as much.

Other things that can cause a 4 cylinder engine to vibrate a lot, is a blown head gasket between cylinders.

It's very difficult to detect this problem, even with a compression test, as the data will be quite ambiguous.

However, I wish you luck on fixing this problem.

2000 ford escort 2.0L. plugs, wires, coil pack, alternator, MAF sensor. hard to start and RPM around 1k wants to die (any stops) always runs rough. Says air intake sensor. catalytic converter or CCRM?

Have you cleaned the throttle body and throttle body valve? have you cleaned the idle speed control air bypass valve? are the injectors clean? Are there any fault codes in memory, do the things I mentioned if you haven't already. Also hard engine mounts can cause roughness at idle. Another thing is the timing belt tight?

Engen problem and missing

Sir, your question is not very clear, but I will still try to post a solution here. Engine missing could be due to any problem in fuel system, ignition system, engine or ECM as well.

LOW ENGINE IDLE SPEED (Poor idling):
-Throttle body (do the cleaning and idle speed learning)
-A /C signal circuit
-Fuel pump control circuit
-Fuel pump
-Intake system
-P C V valve (clogged or open) and hose

ROUGH IDLING:
-Cylinder Compression
-Ignition system (Igniters, spark plugs, wiring harness)
-Spark plug fouled, gap too wide or too short. (1.00-1.1 mm)
-Fuel injector circuit
-E C M power source circuit
-Fuel pump control circuit
-Fuel pump (required pressure 44 psi - 49 psi)
-Throttle body (cleaning)
-Intake system
-P C V valve and hose
-Air fuel ratio sensor
-Heated oxygen s ens or
-Mass air flow meter
-Idle hunting
-Throttle body
-Intake system
-P C V valve and hose
-Air fuel ratio sensor
-Mass air flow meter

HESITATION/ POOR ACCELERATION:
-Fuel pump control circuit
-Fuel pump
-Spark plug
-Ignition system
-Fuel injector circuit
-E C M power source circuit
-Mass air flow meter
-Throttle body (do cleaning)
-Intake system
-Valve timing
-Cylinder Compression

2002 Trailblazer rough idling

First try cleaning the throttle body, make sure you take it off the intake manifold so that the rear side gets cleaned as well. While doing the cleaning, disconnect the battery so that the PCM will reset and relearn to the freshly cleaned throttle body.

My 2002 town and country was stalling often and idling rough. i replaced the spark plugs, plug wires and the coil. it is still doing it. it has the 3.8 liter engine. i also tried to clean the throttle...

I helped a friend with a similar problem on his T&C. No check engine code. It was a dirty MAF sensor.
You can get special MAF spray cleaner at your local auto parts store.
As I recall, the sensor is located between the air fliter and the throttle body.
Remove the sensor from the air inlet.
Spray the sensor, soak, spray, soak, etc. Take your time. But, do NOT scrub it with a brush or cloth. Spray only.

Rough Idle 2002 Trailblazer 4.2L could it be the cam solenoid? It shows no code or service engine light but the idle is very rough

Clean throttle body first, make sure you disconnect battery foe about 30 minutes so PCM can relearn to cleaned throttle body.
