Question about Cadillac STS

1 Answer

I have a 1996 cadillac seville STS,i just finished a tune up on it. I put new plugs, plug wires, valve covers, air filter, all 4 oxygen sensors, fuel filter, mass air flow sensor, manifold absolute pressure sensor, cleaned fuel rail and injectors. I also have a new catalytic converter yet to be installed, it runs like a new car, but i still have one problem....when i try to crank it it takes several spins for it to start. I have to hold the key in the start posistion for probably 30 seconds and it starts.it always starts every time it just takes a minute. Could this be my fuel pump or fuel pump control unit, or fuel pump control unit relay ?? please help!!! chris

Hi,

Yep just check your fuel pressure on the rail, also have your fuel pressure regulator tested, but you should be able to pick up on this when you check the fuel pressure.

If you are getting the correct fuel pressure before starting and during your starting seqence then your fuel system delivery will be fine, this means that all your fuel control modules etc will be operating correctly.

You need to check the delivery signal to the inectors and check that your cam angle and crank angle sensor signals to the ECM, are at the correct voltage rated which is usually 2.5 volts to the ECM and 2.0 volts from the ECM to the injectors.

Once you have done this let me know and I can give you further information.

Thanks

Jason

When the Valve Cover Seals leak past the Spark Plug Seals, it will get Oil on the Plugs, not a huge problem but something you can do yourself with changing the Valve Cover Gaskets

Where are the fusebox locations on the 1996 caddilac sts

The fuse block is located next to the air filter on the driver's side of the engine. Lift the cover to gain access.

The Maxi-Fuses and relays are located next to the engine compartment fuse block on the driver’s side of the engine.

The rear fuse block is located on the front wall of the trunk behind the rear seat on the driver's side. Loosen the four trunk trim fasteners and pull the trim away from the fuse block to gain access.

For other details and description about specific fuse can check the 1996 Cadillac Seville STS - Owners Manual (page 314 and next).

Hope helps (remember comment and rated this).

MY CADILLAC DEVILLE 1997 DONT PASS SMOG IT FAILED THE HC (PPM) THE MAX WAS 47 THE AVE WAS 9 ND THE MEAS WAS 140 AT 15MPH AND AT 25MPH THE MAX WAS 31 AND THE AVE WAS 7 AND THE MEAS WAS 127.. CAN YOU TELL ME...

i'd start with a complete tune up. plugs, wires, pcv valve, gas and air filter. what engine code are you getting? normally vehicles 1996 and newer get a obd (computer) emissions test not an asm (tail pipe) test. and perhaps a new catylitic converter and oxygen sensors

Spark plugs

you can see the spark plug wires( front 4) on the valve cover where you put oil in the engine. they have a T shaped head that you twist back and forth while pulling up on them. The spark plugs can be removed with a spark plug socket and extension. The rear 4 plugs are in the valve cover by the firewall.
