It sounds like a blown head gasket, a crack block or a cracked head.

White smoke coming from my X-Type Jaguar from the back


White smoke from tail pipe normally means you are burning coolant. Could be a blown head gasket. With car running, check for sweet smell from tail pipe, if you do, it's coolant burning. Also see if you have coolant running out of tail pipe. You can also remove spark plugs and see if they look clean or like new. Another indicator that coolant is making it's way into engine cylinders. Could only be going into one of all.

What color smoke white means coolant. Blue means oil. You could have loss of compression causing the drag the noise could be a air or coolant leak

That might be steam, check to see if you are loosing coolant if is loosing coolant but it doesn't leak onto the ground you could have a bad head gasket. It doesn't do it with the clutch in because there is no load on the engine.

Possibly a blown head gasket, letting coolant into the cylinders to be burned. White smoke is usually coolant burning. Have the engine's compression tested to verify.

One of the main causes of white exhaust smoke and coolant loss is a cracked or warped cylinder head, a cracked engine block, or head gasket failure caused by overheating. A cracked head may allow coolant to leak into one or more cylinders or into the combustion chamber of the engine. Dirty coolant, a poorly maintained cooling system, a low coolant level, or a non-functioning cooling fan can cause engine overheating. In addition, engine wear can eventually cause the gaskets to lose their capacity to seal properly allowing internal coolant loss. Intake manifold gasket and head gasket failures are two of the most common sources of internal coolant loss caused by engine wear.

I have a 1997 bmw 528i and its constantly overheating also theres a lot of thick white smoke that coming from the tail pipe. What could the problem be?


Unfortunately, you are experiencing two of the classic signs of a bad head gasket. Have the coolant checked with a test kit from your favorite auto parts store to verify this. I would check the radiator coolant regularly to verify coolant loss. Sometimes engine cooling system designs can allow for a bad hose to come in contact with the exhaust and make smoke out of the tail pipe so have all of the hoses checked too.

You are loosing coolant. White smoke only comes from water. Gray or blue from oil

No secret here, intake manifold or head gasket.

You may have a blown piston ring, valve seals, valve guides, cracked head gasket or a cracked block, etc... It sounds major though for you to lose power suddenly and have all that smoke...
