Question about Ford Tempo

1 Answer

1992 Ford AX2 TX5 V6 DOHC 24 valve (non turbo). 300,000km on the clock. This car is developing a power problem at high revs. At or around 70-80kmh highway cruising or under heavy acceleration. There is a power loss with the engine. All electrics and lights are fine but the motors loses all power. No coughs or splutters or jerking motion. Simply no compression is what it seems like.If it is driven very gently this will still occur after a few kilometers of travel. Seems to be getting worse the more it is driven. Using a lot of oil(engine. There is a seal gone and it is leaking/ burning a lot of oil. It is not leaking internally. Apparently this car has been driven very hard and I will not be surprised if the motor is in need of an overhaul or replacement. It does not seem to be a fuel or spark issue but *** for fuel[air management and even compression I have yet to test it. Electronic injection is a little grey to me as I am an old carburetor aged individual. All this engine management makes me hesitant to start somewhere. HAs this car been driven to death? Is it a common issue with the TX5? Is it worth saving (the car is sound other than the engine trouble)?

The 1992 Ford engine has 300,000 km. That's quite a bit of mileage. You say that there seems to be a loss of compression and that it uses a lot of oil through an external leak. There is no spark issue but the electronic fuel injection is grey to you.

I think the car has been driven so much, that the engine has mechanical wear issues. The electronic fuel injection is fine, even the dohc 24 valve feature is nice to have. But, if the engine is mechanically worn out, all the electronics in the world won't help it run well. I'm surprised you cen get up to 70-80 kmh on such an engine.

I would either replace the engine with a rebuilt one, or have it overhauled to get better performance. It's running on borrowed time, judging by the seal leak.

It's never good to have an engine oil leak.

Hi Duane, thanks for the information. Is this piston and ring type replacement or are we talking major rebuild? Obviously the seal must be dealt with. DO I just tell the guy to get a reconditioned motor or sell it for scrap? Can we pop the head off and look at the rings? I have no idea what comparison in the U.S. Is to this beasty $ door hatch. any ways thanks for the input. I will test the compression and tell him the news
    Thanks again
    Cheers
    Jeff

What size motor does a 1993 mazda mx3 have?

The MX-3 came with three engine options: a 1.5 L I4 (only found in the Autozam AZ-3), a 1.6 L I4 and a 1.8 L V6. The 1.6 L was available in two versions, an 88 hp (66 kW) SOHC/16-valve B6-ME unit which powered 1992 and 1993 models, or a 106 hp (79 kW) DOHC/16-valve B6-D unit which was found in 1994 and later models. The Japanese market DOHC/16-valve B5-ZE produced 115-120 PS (85-88 kW) (lower powered in automatic versions) and the most powerful DOHC 24-valve V6 K8-DE produced 140 PS (103 kW) at 7,000 rpm (Japan) and 130 hp in North American models. All were available with a 5-speed manual or an optional 4-speed automatic transmission, depending upon the market.
