You have to remove the axle before you can remove the bearing. There should be a large nut in the center of the hub. Remove this. You will need to remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle so that you can pull the knuckle away from the axle. The axle is splined and should fall out as you pull the knuckle away from the axle. Once you have done this you can get on with removing the bearing unit.

2007 dodge caliber rt slap stick put new tires on 3 months ago driver side front tire is worn cant let off wheel car pulls bad to the right side of the road

The popping could be from a bad CV axle joint, or a bad wheel bearing. Better get checked, sounds very worn. Raise the wheel on a jack and watch for play. Grab wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock, and shake back and forth-watch for play. Wheel bearing? CV joint -is boot still good? Ball joints at bottom of wheel attaching point to the control arm-check this for play, too.

If cv joint is bad car has a lot of vibration, boots arent torn or leaking, but makes a humming noise. is this cv joint or something else?

cv joints should not click as that is the first indication of a failed unit
( going slow and changing direction produces a click, click is a cv joint)
wheel bearings should not be tight as that will produce a humming noise and will result in early failure
because the axle turns with the change of direction ,the distance from the pivot point to the transmission changes and so the shaft will move in and out of the transmission to compensate
take it to an accredited drive line specialist for a diagnosis

One of your CV joints are bad, inspect which CV joint needs to be replaced. Roll your windows down and make tight right and left corners in an empty parking lot slowly and listen for the clicking noise. If it's coming from the passenger side window or the drivers side window, which ever side the noise is coming from is the side that the CV joint has failed and will need to be replaced.
Thank you for using FIxya and replacing the front wheel bearing improperly buy hammering the CV joint out instead of using a wheel bearing puller will cause damage to the CV joint as to what you have described. Good luck and keep us posted.

My left front tire makes a rubbing or grinding noise when I drive. When I turn the wheel either way it also rumbles and bangs. What is causing this?

You could have a bad wheel bearing or a bad CV joint. Inspect your CV joint by turning the wheel all the way to the left and inspect the rubber boot for any signs of damage and see if there is any play by grabbing the CV joint and try to move it.
The other way to check is to drive the van slowly in an empty parking lot turning the wheel to one side and then the other. Listen for any abnormal noise and see if you can feel anything lose through you steering wheel.
If there is any signs of damage to the CV joint like oil leaking or movement. Replace the CV joint as soon as possible, and try not to drive the van till you have the CV joint replaced or the wheel bearing. Total CV joint failure will cause you to have the van towed to have it replaced. Try to drive it to the Garage to save you the tow cost.
Thank you for using fixya and be safe.

Does it happen turning in both direrctions? It could be cv joints. from a standstill, turn the wheel hard to the right and accelerate in a circle. do the same on a left turn. If you hear a clicking sound, it's bad cv joints. inspect the rubber boot for tears & stress cracks. once the grease escapes, the joint is no good

Popping sound when turning. axle looks good. no leaks. could it be the wheel bearing?

Could be the bearing..

Is it a clicking sound ??
If so - could be a CV joint..

Check all the CV boots (the rubber covers over the CV joints)..

Push on them looking for splits,, seperatiob or cracks.. If you see anything like that -rest assured you have a CV joint problem..

If boots go bad & are replaced in time (& CV joints greased) they can be saved.. If it has been too long - the joint will need to be replaed too..

Hope this helps !!
Please rate me good ;o)

you have to replace bearing and hub as a unit.you have to remove remove brakes and caliper rotor set them aside dont disconnect brake line. get a piece of clothes rack wire to hold brake caliper .do not let it hang by brake hose. you got to remove hub nut. best way to do that is loosen it a litttle while tire still on weight of car keep wheel from turning .

Any guides on how to check a cv joint?

Usually when a CV joint goes bad, it's because the rubber boot has become torn or otherwise open to the elements, and dirt/grit/etc has gotten in there and ruined the joint. If the boots are intact, chances are that the CV joint is OK.

It may be a wheel bearing too - this could be an early sign of it. Audi is known for wheel bearing failures.
