Question about 2004 Kia Optima

1 Answer

Problem started 2 days ago - when accelerating from stop, engine would sputter. Took car to AutoZone for Engine light and came back with cylinder #2. Took advice from friends and AutoZone to change spark plugs first. Replaced spark plugs today. When finished, tried to start the car - Engine turns, but does not start.

    Thank you for your advice.
Battery is OK, when ignition is turned on all power in car comes on (lights, clock, stereo, etc.) Engine is turning, but not starting.
Replaced all the spark plugs - no luck.
Tested each spark plug, with both ignition coils - no spark.
Bought a new ignition coil, installed and tested spark plugs - no spark.
    Suspecting electical issue. Very frustrating.
I don't know....it could be something extremely simple.

First of all for the cylinder 2 problem. As you got replaced the spark plugs but did you got the voltages checked at ignition coils. The ignition coil gives power to spark plug to spark.Check the voltage of each cylinder .Which ever coil checked out low voltage. That ignition coil needs to be replaced. Ignition coil is replaced as full coil pack unit. Another possibility check the connection of the cylinder.remove and reconnect. If the connections are not perfect it will not let the car to start still the engine turns. Also there are many other possibilities to be checked. There are some possibilities which you will have to check in this case:--
1) First of all check the power and voltage to the battery. With meter it will show exact 12 volt if the battery is charged. If the voltage is less get the battery charged at local auto repair shop. If the battery is internally drained and not getting charged then its time to replace the battery.
2) When you crank the car do you see spark coming at the spark plug? If no then its time to check the spark plugs and coil pack. If the spark plugs are not worn out and looks new then its time to check coil pack. The spark plug gets power to spark from coil pack.
3) The other thing to check in this case is the starter solenoid of the car. If the battery is charged and you start the car then it gives power to the starter to start the car. But if starter is faulty or not connected properly then car will not start.
4) The other thing to check in this case is fuel in the car. If there is fuel in the car then check the blockages in the fuel pump if the fuel pump looks proper then check the fuel filter above the fuel pump.
5) If all the above possibilities mentioned above checked out OK/perfect then it’s a electrical issue and the wiring's in the car needs to be checked. The car gets power from the battery to get started. so the wires from battery needs to be checked one by one.
Thanks. keep updated for any more query.you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Have you checked the throttle body? That requires an annual cleaning and could very well be the cause of the issues you have with your Honda.

Spitting and sputtering like not getting fuel

It may have fouled your plugs, but you can tke them out and clean them. Use a small blade and scrape the carbon off.
You could also take the egr valve off and try to clean it. Use a wire brush. also clean as best you can the passages under the valve, they can get plugged with carbon. Use a new gasket when you bolt the egr valve back down. Keep trying to get the fuel filter off, but the egr cleaning should help.

I'd take it to any good parts store (autozone, advance, etc..) and have them do a FREE charging system test and load test your battery. Almost sounds like your alternator is not charging or starting to go bad (not charging at full capacity)

98 camaro manual tran..sputters and has acceleration prob.chek enjine flashing,,exhaust rumble and sputters back fires occasionally at start of engine slowly accelerates

Hi:
Not sure of all what is wrong, but one thing I can suggest is to have your computer codes downloaded to see what it is showing as a fault code. Only a few codes can cause the check engine light to flash, and the most common is a cylinder misfire. Your car most likely has an ignition module or coil pack failing, and that problem is causing most of your symptoms. You can usually get your local autoparts store, such as Autozone, to scan your car for free, and tell you what is tripping the check engine light, and then you can go from there!

This is what you need to do, change the plug wires, because if there is a bad wire you would definitely experiences sputter or a stutter, so do the plug wires and at the same time do the spark plugs, this should take care of your problem. if not let me know and i will give you the next step

Guys, what you are experiencing is the car built warning system. When your engine light blinks it indicates a Major Problem has occurred or is occurring in the engine. When this occurs the cars goes into a "safe," mode which means all power is cut by at least half in an effort to save the car from more major damage. You can take your VW to any large chain autoparts store (autozone, advance, etc) a lot of them are offering a free engine diagnosis. Do this if possible to see where the problems maybe coming from and ways to fix them.
