Question about 2001 Kia Sportage

1 Answer

Well our 2001 kia sportage will not start its not the battery we had a mechanic look at it he thinkgs its the timing belt and motor. He quoted us a price of $ 1100.00 to fix. The car was puttering and sometimes you could press the petal all the way to the floor and the car would still putter. Does this sound like a timing belt? and how much would something like this cost

Yes,if the timing belt has broken,it is a good chance the valves are bent, but not always,so put the timing belt on,and see if the engine will run o k,if not, then have the head pulled,,This is a interference engine, and the valves will hit the pistons if the belt breaks,or jumps, but I have seen cases where the valves where o k,so go for a timing belt, and put a water pump on it sense the mechanic will be right there at it,and yes,put a new water pump on the engine.

Tring to find out if the kia sportage 2001 4wd 4 door has a timing belt or chain or how do u find out which it is

You can always tell if a car has a timing belt or chain by looking at the timing belt/chain cover. Metal cover means chain, plastic cover means belt, there are a few exceptions but in general this holds true, your Sportage has a belt by the way. :)

How do you set the timing for a 2001 kia sportage?

There are no ways to set timing like the older vehicle. These are done through mechanical timing(timing belt), CPS(crank position sensor), and the computer. What kind of probelms are you having?

Most mechanic shops would be able to check the fuel pressure coming from your fuel pump. Before you do that, try replacing your fuel filter. If your fuel filter has gotten clogged, there may be enough resistance to kill the motor. It is possible that you have some other obstruction in your fuel system, like a clogged fuel line that will also cause this problem.
