How do you know it is running too hot? Some models are designed to run really hot to lower emissions.

A lot of people overlook the simple overflow tank cap. If this cap loses the psi pressure it requires to hold then it can make the engine run hot because it's losing pressure. Think about it like this, if you have ever had a radiator to leak, the water level could be good, but the temp gauge shows it overheats. This is because the system isn't holding the pressure. The cap cost about $7. I'm not saying this will fix the problem but it is overlooked and fixes the problem on a lot of over heating cars.

The cooling fans on these works at two speeds and it is common for one speed of the fan motor to stop working. It is also controlled by the PCM and not just a sensor. If this sounds like your problem, you should have a fault code and the check engine should be on.Hope that helps.

If your engine is overheating, Try this procedure:

  • Dirt and debris can get lodged in the radiator air flow paths. This can block the radiator and cause your engine to overheat and damage the engine.

  • The thermostat can be stuck close. If you feel the upper hose very hot and the lower hose cooler than normal, it may be a stuck thermostat.

  • Make sure the radiator and the overflow bottle are filled to the proper levels.

  • Bleed air from the coolant system:This is best done by running the engine with the radiator cap off until you see when the air bubbles stop coming up.

  • Check the radiator fans: The easiest way is to turn on the cars air conditioner and turn up the A/C fans. Both radiator fans should come on when the A/C starts

  • Make a pressure test by using a pressure testing tool (available at most auto parts stores). Use the pressure shown on your radiator cap. Most cars are 16 PSI or less, so don't exceed that pressure. Replace the radiator cap if it doesn't hold the pressure.

My 2001 pt cruiser limited over heated. It has already had a new radiator and both fans replaced with in the year. Should i now replace the water pump which is the original?

Overheating is caused by:
1. plugged radiator core
2. Wrong mix of water and coolant.
3. Low coolant level.
4. stuck thermostat
5. hoses collapsing.
6. Air lock in system
7. Bad fins on water pump.

Have 2003 pt cruiser 2.4 engine have no heat replaced radiator how do I check water pump

I would check the operating temp, could be a bad thermostat, also make sure your heater core is not plugged. In addition make sure you have no air locks in the system.

RUNNING BAD ONCE COOLANT WAS INTRODUCED TO THE SYSTEM AFTER WATER PUMP REPAIR. ENGINE STARTED AND RAN GREAT UNTIL COOLANT WAS INTRODUCED

Could be as simple as "air lock" in the system. Remove the radiator cap. Start the engine. Then use a gloved hand to squeeze on the radiator hoses to see if they are firm and look in the top of the radiator to see if coolant is flowing. Be careful to avoid any moving and hot parts. You may end up having to drain and refill the system. If you haven't done so already, this may be a good time to replace the thermostat as well.

2003 PT Cruiser . We have tried every thing replaced thermostat + flushed radiator + replaced hoses + checked fan but two days later it over heats when moving in very slow traffic

HAve you check for a bad water pump?.. sometimes even new thermostat are defective too.
Do you know if your car has a relieve valve to bleed the cooling system. If the system has air it will over heat at low RPM's. Sometimes even flushing the radiator wont firx a cooling system with air.
So make sure about these two things I mentioned.

Overheating engine

Check your oil dipstick for coolant, or a mucky substance. Your symptoms sound like a blown head gasket.

Pt overheating within 5 minutes 2001 2litre auto how do I change cambelt thx mike

Hi,
Engine overheating? Check:
1. Coolant level at cold
2. Coolant leak check for loss of, during "not hot" running condition. (water pump, hoses)
If above is ok, I would replace the thermostat. It's inexpensive and easy enough to do.

Cam belt not addressed in this response...

Hope this helps with the overheating problem... Good luck!
