Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components.
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The brake switch
• The rear integration module (RIM)
• The transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM)
With the ignition ON, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid from the ignition 3 relay. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is controlled by the rear integration module. When the rear integration module (RIM) receives a class 2 serial data message from the transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM) indicating that the shift lever is in the PARK position the rear integration module (RIM) grounds the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This causes the solenoid to energize mechanically locking the shift lever in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the rear integration module receives the brake applied signal and turns off the ground to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This allows the shift lever to be moved out of the PARK position.

Shift Lever Does Not Move with Brake Pedal Depressed

Apply the parking brake and block the wheels.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Attempt to move the shift lever out of the PARK position.
Does the shift lever move out of the PARK position?
YES - Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems
NO - Go to Step 3

Turn OFF the ignition.
Install a scan tool.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
With a scan tool, observe the TCC brake switch parameter in the transmission data display list.
Press and release the brake pedal several times.
Does the TCC brake switch status turn ON and OFF with the brake pedal?
YES - Go to Step 4
NO - Go to Stop Lamps Inoperative in Lighting Systems

With a scan tool, observe the brake to shift control parameter in the rear integration module data list.
Press and release the brake pedal several times.
Does the brake to shift control status turn ON and OFF with the brake pedal?
YES - Go to Step 5
NO - Go to Step 8

Turn OFF the ignition.
Connect a test lamp between the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid supply voltage circuit and the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit at the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
With a scan tool, command the brake to shift control ON and OFF several times while observing the test lamp.
Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with each command?
YES - Go to Step 7
NO - Go to Step 6

Test the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit for and open or short to battery voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.


?€¢
The automatic transmission shift lock control switch.


?€¢
The park/neutral position switch.

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the park/neutral position switch. When the transmission is in the PARK position the contacts in the park/neutral position switch are closed. This allows current to flow through the switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.
Park Lock Solenoid
The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid. The system consists of the park lock solenoid. With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.
Shift Lever Does Not Move with Brake Pedal Depressed
DEFINITION: Transmission shift lever will not move out of the PARK position with the ignition ON and the brake pedal pressed.

There is an interlock device that prevents the transmission from being shifted without the brake being applied. Either the device failed when you last parked it or the electrical connector(if applicable) became disconnected).
If it's column shift, then dismantle the area around the steering column. ALWAYS disconnect the battery negative (ground) before working around the steering column. It's possible to set an air bag off and get your neck broken. No kidding.
If it's floor shift, still disconnect the battery negative. Can't be too safe around air bags.
Those interlocks are a bear. Most of them have a bypass, where you can insert a screwdriver, or a key (careful), and mechanically disable it. Look for a slot or small opening around the shifter. They have to have the bypass so tow truck drivers can move cars w/o the key.
Keep trying. You'll find it.

DISCONNECT BRAKE PEDAL 1991 SUBURBAN


98 Suburban 5.7L, automatic trans is stuck in park - no previous shifting problems, I know that the brake switch also operates the brake/transmission solenoid (BTS). Stepping on the brake pedal prior to starting the vehicle allows shifting from park to another gear. When I switch the key to the "on" position, I don't hear the BTS click. I can start the vehicle and the brake lights work fine. I just can't shift out of Park. I am unemployed and I am trying to troubleshoot this problem and fix it myself. Please help!

The brake switch may have stopped working. Have someone check to see if you have brake lights when you touch the pedal. The brake switch unlocks the shift interlock that allows you to take the vehicle out of park. If there are no brake lights, check that you have power to the switch connector for the brake switch and if so, replace the switch.

Having trouble shifting from park to any gear, when I wait about 15 secs it may shift easily and other times I turn the wheel and it will shift


Do not shift into park and move the steering wheel to lock it. It will lock itself if the vehicle is moved or someone tries to steel it. Reason is that the lock pin hsas many holes to drop into and if you lock it when you have turning pressure on in it. You will lock it with pressure on the lock pin.
Second, always set your parking brake before, not after putting it in park. Never put your front tires against a curb and put it in park without letting the vehile roll away from the curb.. An don't hang you car on a slope by putting it in park. Parking brake always befor parking gear and hands off steering wheel when placing in park. Try it, you'll like it.. forcing your shifter to come out of park can cause damage to the shifting componants. Let me know how it works for you. - Ned_

Stuck in park


I stuck a flat blade screw driver up in the little white switch above the brake pedal (you can see it if you look directly above the pedal through the steering rod. It is being pushed by a small piece of metal in the plastic casing) and then tried shifting out of park and it worked. It was a really cold night before and I guess the grease just froze up. It seems to be working fine now even without pushing it in with the screwdriver. Thanks so much deltamech!

Suburban wont go into gear


check to see if your brake lights are working.there is a safety system that wont allow you to shift from park unless you push the brake pedal........most of these systems utilize the brake light switch for this........if your brake lights dont work it is most likely a blown fuse.

The brake lockout linkage is out of adjustment. It needs to be adjusted so that the shifter will operate. Hope this helps;
