Hi

On modern engines with computer management there are various sensors to tell the computer exactly what the engine requires in the line of fuel, when to spark the coil/s and so on. The engine needs so fire the sparks at the correct time and also inject the fuel at the right time. So a sensor is fitted to pick up exactly at what degree of rotation the crank is. It is sometimes not even mounted near the crank but still called a crank angle sensor, it can even be in the distributor (Nissan and others) This is in the form of a disc with many tiny slots or holes in it and has a light emitting diode and a light sensing diode either side of the disc, as it turns the light is cut off and the computer detects this and can work out the position of the crankshaft. It can also be in the form toothed disc much like a gear on the crank shaft or even use the flywheel to sense the position using a hall effect sensor to detect the position of the flywheel or crankshaft pulley to determine exactly where the crank is positioned.
It is a sensor that tells the ecm where #1 cylinder is. They are located on different parts of the engine on different cars.
It reads the position and/or speed of an engine as it is rotating. When crankshaft is turning, the sensor will provide a signal to the PCM. The PCM will then allow the engine to start by providing spark and fuel.
It reads the rotational position of the crankshaft
Ohmmeters are used to measure the resistance of circuits and the currents that run through them. These devices are used to detect faulty circuits which could cause malfunctioning of equipment hooked up to them. When you are testing a cam sensor, check your car owner's manual for the acceptable resistance measurements for your specific model. Different car models have different acceptable levels for their cam sensor. Make sure the car is turned off before you test the cam sensor to avoid the risk of an electric shock.
Zero the ohmmeter by either pressing the center zeroing button or by touching the red and black probes to each other. The ohmmeter should read 0.Connect the red probe to the positive terminal of the cam sensor, and the black probe to the negative terminal. Both terminals should be marked with a plus sign for the positive terminal and a negative sign for the negative terminal.Observe the reading on the ohmmeter, then detach the probes. Cam sensors with faulty resistance measurements should be replaced

Changed the alternator and starter and the timing belt on a 1998 subaru forester and it still wont start ...

If the engine cranks but won't start, the starter and alternator would not be the problem.
Was the engine running before you changed the timing belt ?
Do you have spark to the plugs and fuel to the injectors ?
Do you have normal compression on all cylinders ?

I replaced the head gaskets on my subaru forester and now it will not start posibble timing prob

It sounds like you might have it a little out of whack, probably a good thing did it didn't start, you could have messed it up bad. Why did you replace the head gaskets?? Was it overheating? Were the gaskets bad? Did you mark the cams and belt before you took them off? Did you get a new belt? I would pull the spark plugs out, take the rocker covers back off, take the belt off, watch the cams, bring them around to their mark, bring the crank around to it's mark, make sure it is easy to spin, if not, you are hitting something. get the crank and the cams aligned on their marks and put the new belt with the marks on the belt aligned to the marks on the cam and crank. If the belt doesn't have marks, get one that does. Or put the marks on there. Check the old belt and see if it has marks on it. They help a lot. Once you get the belt on there and the tensioner set, spin the engine by hand and make sure it spins free, It should come around to the TDC mark on the crank again and again. Unless you forgot to hook something up, like the coil pack or a couple wires here and there. Check it out, Hope this helps.
