No I am not sure if it is the belt. I will have that checked first.

If you are sure it isn't simply a belt problem, it wouldn't cost much to have it checked by a reputable automotive AC shop.
Check your local BBB for reputation before going in; replacing compressors is an expensive proposition and Chrysler's Airtemp are pretty reliable.

How do i fix my 2001 740i bmw it makes a ticking sound win idleing

could possibly be a lifter tapping (Ticking) ,depending on how many miles the vehicle has on it might be time for lifters to be adjusted, most foreign overhead cam engines must have lifters adjuster periodically ,if you turn on the air its puts more of a load on the engine causing a louder sound (also check oil level an engine low on oil will start to tick too.. the more wear the engine gets the looser the lifters can get over time ,look in your service manual if you have one and see what the intervals are on lifter adjustment this can give you an idea.
possible only if
the ticking sound is coming from the top of the engine usually comes from under the vavle covers where the lifters are located,

Replace your cam positioning syncronizer head same problem squealing was coming from around alternator water pump area which is exactly where the cam positioning sensor is located not hard to do I did mine in a garage and it took about four hours

When I turn on the a/c I get no cold air. There is a ticking noise arond my belts. Is it the a/c compressor?

maybe. The compressor uses an electric clutch on the front to engage. when it engages, you should see the inside of the pulley start turning. With the clutch off, the pulley turns but not the inside. If the clutch is clicking but not engaging, it will have to be repaired with special tools.

remove the AC relay to shut the AC off all the time. Not sure why it wont start but you may havea security lockout. Fully charge the battery to proceed.

Some noise from the AC pump is normal, but if the noise is changing or gets worse then the pump is probable going bad and will need serviced or replaced.
