Hi! Where do you feel the grinding noise coming from? In the engine or on the wheels?

You feel a little pulling from the rear when driving? Here are few things that can cause a noise while driving. A stuck up brake which you can feel a little pull. A worn wheel bearing, no grease causing a metal to metal contact. Check your gear oil too for you may be lacking which can cause noise. Hope this helps and have a good one!

You may be having transmission issues. It could be something as simple as the transmission fluid is low and needs more fluid added to it, or there could be a more serious transmission problem. The noise could also be caused by a worn or loose belt on the engine. There may just be some type of heat shield loose that vibrates when the engine speed is increased quickly. Depending on the vehicle, you could have a cooling fan clutch that is worn out. As you can see by this brief synopsis, there are many possibilities that could be the cause of the noise you're hearing. Like I said at the beginning, take the vehicle to a mechanic at a service garage you trust and let them diagnose the problem first hand. One person's "grinding" noise is another person's rattle or vibration. It's really hard to help you without actually hearing the noise.

The mechanic can drive the vehicle and check out the noise an likely pinpoint the problem immediately. It could be quick and easy to repair ( cheap! ), or it may be more serious and difficult to repair ( expensive! ). let's hope it's not the latter! The mechanic will give you options for repair depending on the age and miles on the vehicle. Good luck with the problem!

If it is a diesel it is probably a cracked flywheel. If it is gas I would look at the flywheel by removing the starter. Please rate me on this answer.

My 05 Chevy 2500HD is making a grinding noise when decelerating, as in going down a hill. When applying pressure to the accelerator it stops. It sounds like its coming from the rear bottom.

It is the transfer case. It seems to be a big problem with the 2004 and 2005 models. They are not synchronized and bend the forks alot. The noise you hear is the chain rolling off the gear. Mine only did it when I was going over 45 downhill and not on the throttle for a few seconds. Hope this helps...

I had a similar problem and had to have the 4 wheel drive serviced. It need new grease. the grease i had was old and it was causing the gears not engage cleanly thus causing the grinding sound until they were realigned.

Grinding noise front end.

I say it's the CV joints. You have to jack up under the lower A-Arm, to take the spring pressure off of it, to check them.

(Use jack stands, and wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Emergency brake On. Work on a hard level surface. Be SAFE! Trucks can be replaced, YOU cannot!)
