Question about 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The mechanic sais I need a new computer for my 2003 Jeep Grande Cherokee Leredo 4WD. How do I know this? The issue started with some smoking below the oil filter. They said it needed a rear-main seal. Which is fine. The next day they tell me it needs a new computer. The only electrical issue has been the check engine light. Not sure what to believe.
Considering the cost of a new, or even used computer, I would suggest buying (or finding one to borrow) a code scanner.
You would have to shop it (eBay for example) since they can cost up to a couple of hundred dollars but basic (you need OBDII) are offered online for far less cost. I paid $30 at Harbor Freight for mine on sale and it does everything I need.
The scanner, if it gets any output from the computer, will tell you if something has failed in it or elsewhere.
I would also suggest that you gain access to the vehicle long enough to physically mark the case of the installed unit so you can see if it had been replaced or not. There are probably only a few percent ripoff artists around but you may have one of them.
Owning your own scanner lets you diagnose your computer so you can get an indication of the nature of a failure before taking that and most future vehicles in for repair. They have served me well.

The oil leak and the computer are unrelated, was the truck running fine, just engine light on and an oil leak, then computer is working fine, that the reason the light is on is because the computer pick up a bad signal from one of your engine sensor's, so it's doing it's job, if they started the work for the oil leak fine, but take it some where like autozone where they will pull code's for free, do not replace computer till you have done this, then get back with us here at FixYa so we can help you with your trouble code.
