The mechanic sais I need a new computer. How do I

The mechanic sais I need a new computer for my 2003 Jeep Grande Cherokee Leredo 4WD. How do I know this? The issue started with some smoking below the oil filter. They said it needed a rear-main seal. Which is fine. The next day they tell me it needs a new computer. The only electrical issue has been the check engine light. Not sure what to believe.

Considering the cost of a new, or even used computer, I would suggest buying (or finding one to borrow) a code scanner. You would have to shop it (eBay for example) since they can cost up to a couple of hundred dollars but basic (you need OBDII) are offered online for far less cost. I paid $30 at Harbor Freight for mine on sale and it does everything I need.
The scanner, if it gets any output from the computer, will tell you if something has failed in it or elsewhere.
I would also suggest that you gain access to the vehicle long enough to physically mark the case of the installed unit so you can see if it had been replaced or not. There are probably only a few percent ripoff artists around but you may have one of them.
Owning your own scanner lets you diagnose your computer so you can get an indication of the nature of a failure before taking that and most future vehicles in for repair. They have served me well.
Good luck-

The oil leak and the computer are unrelated, was the truck running fine, just engine light on and an oil leak, then computer is working fine, that the reason the light is on is because the computer pick up a bad signal from one of your engine sensor's, so it's doing it's job, if they started the work for the oil leak fine, but take it some where like autozone where they will pull code's for free, do not replace computer till you have done this, then get back with us here at FixYa so we can help you with your trouble code.

No reverse...

Try taking off the shift mechanism and change gears with someone sitting in the vehicle and also with their foot on the brake. See if it shifts then,. If not - you will need to take the trans pan off and check it physically.
Dropping the pan and changing the filter will allow you see more and if not - see if you can get a deal by removing the transmission and putting it back in.
Sadly sounds like reverse took a turn for the worse - no matter how few miles.

Knocking noise when accelerating!! It's loudest when I first start my Jeep grande Cherokee leredo (2000) but then only happens when I step on the gas. Any ideas of what this could be. I do need my...

Knocking noise is generally from the engine. What is your oil pressure? If pressure is low and oil is reasonably full, refrain from driving it till the cause is determined. Noise can also come from the transmission or transfer case but more likely it's from the engine. It can come from sticking valve lifters (moderately bad to potentially serious) connecting rod or main crank bearings (always serious) or piston slap (annoying, expensive but not terribly serious unless very bad) Piston wristpins can also knock but are very rare in todays pistons. Either way, this is not an item to ignore.

A few questions for you how many miles on the engine? have you had regular oil changes done? This model should have the 4.0 liter engine if so what you are describing sounds like rod knock. The 4.0L engine is designed to take allot of abuse and last for well over 200,000 miles but if regular oil changes are not done you are in for trouble. And the only way to fix rod knock to have the engine rebuilt.
