Question about Ford Escort
Reverse polarity means that the battery was installed the other way around - with the leads connected to the wrong plots (- to +)/reversed. Just connect it correctly and the battery will charge.
The battery runs down when not connected because you have a consumer that isn't closed when the engine is shut down. How to identify the part that is drawing the power: shut down the car and remove the key, get an Ampmeter, set it on the 2 amp range and connect it between the(- )plot of the battery and the cable that goes to the body of the car. Now, unlike in a normal car, you will see a current passing. Open the fuse box and start removing the fuses one by one - when you will get to the one that is powering the faulty part the current will stop. Identify which components that fuse is powering and start disconnecting them one at a time. When you find the part just replace it or, if it has a switch , turn it off.
