Is the coolant level low? if it is look for leaks under the engine and at the radiator tanks on either side and inspect all the coolant hoses. You should have the radiator cap pressure tested. it can also be a thermostat that is stuck closed a bad cooling fan relay or a bad coolant temperature sensor which the main fan relies on to engage.

radiator is probably stopped up and when you allow coolant into the heater core which is a small radiator itself. it get sufficient releive to run normal. or your sender for the temp guage is bad and the car never is really overheating.

Engine overheats and heater blowing cold air

You have air trapped in system , change thermostat , bleed air from system , let it run hot while adding coolant with blower full blast on all front and rear heaters .

My drive belt has gone on my audi a4 at work can i drive the car back home to get fixed

No! If your engine has a single serpentine belt, the water pump won' work and the engine will overheat very quickly, possibly causing permanent engine damage.

I HAVE A 2000 AUDI A4 , THE HEATER CORE BLEW, IS THERE A WAY TO CLIP THE HOSE OFF SAFELY DRIVE IT TO A MECHANIC.

If you can cut the heater hoses off from the heater core at the fire-wall, and then use a piece of pipe or a hose adapter and hose clamps to join or connect the two heater hoses together, then you can actually drive the vehicle until you require heat from the heater core inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

Coolent system fault symbol Audi A6

It could be that the thermostat is stuck in the open position thus providing maximum coolant flow through the engine when the engine is still cold, ie from a cold start. (The thermo should close when the engine is stopped and cold and it opens up once the coolant temp increases and the engine has been running for a few minutes.) Once the engine is hot maximum coolant flow between engine and radiator is normal.

Do you also find that your heater takes a while to provide warm air to the cabin in winter when you notice this condition?

If you do not know when the thermostat was last changed then I would suggest you change it. ( If it malfunctions and sticks in the closed position you will really have a problem). The radiator/engine coolant could no doubt do with a flush and change in any event as it should be done every 2 years. If you don't know when it was last done - do it. Cooling systems tend to be a neglected part of essential vehicle maintenance.
