Question about Volvo V70

1 Answer

Volvo V70 AWD 1998 127,000km The transmission started to behave abnormally after transmission fluid was changed. After about 10 - 15 miles drive it stops changing, seems like it's always on neutral, and car stops. During that 10-15 miles of initial driving it also may change abruptly by itself between "E","S", and "W" modes with front arrow "W" indicator flashing. After some "rest" or "cool down" car can be driven for another 10-15 miles.

Hi! Please try to check the vaccum hoses, if they are not tight fit it can cause abnormality to the transmission. Please replace worn hoses. If vaccum hoses are good the the problem will be on the transmission solenoids, they may reach its break point thats why its acting up. Hope this helps and have a good one!

    Thank you for solution suggestion.
Maybe I didn't emphasize that the transmission problem revealed right after the transmission fluid was changed, before that fluid change transmission worked OK (although the fluid was pretty dirty). So, if vacuum hoses, or solenoids, could be the reason than that's OK, I'll check that. I just wonder could it be any other reason before paying NZ$3000 to the workshop to rebuild transmission. Thank you.

I have a 2001 Volvo v70 cross country AWD I added tranny fluid 4 qts but now tranny slips after going a couple miles what can I do to fix..

Four qts of tranny fluid is a lot if u didn't overfill it? About all you can try is a bottle of Transmedic or Transx type fluid from auto parts store. If that doesn't break sticking clutch plates loose you will have to replace the transmission or have it rebuilt.

2003 Volvo v70 shift hard in the first gear only when car in warm. It starts after the car has been on for 20 minutes or so?

start off by checking the transmission fluid when its hot and in park for the proper level,
check the color of the fluid compared to new fluid,
volvos probably use dealer specific transmission fluids and there is a possibility normal shelf trans fluid was used and that can cause all sorts of transmission problems.
hard shifts can also be related to transmission and or engine mounts. visually inspect those for wear and or breakage.
dark fluid or particles of metals on the dipstick can be a sign of major transmission problems
clean the dipstick off with a clean white rag to check that.
if its low make sure to use what the dealer recommends even if its high dollar, but if the fluid is already burnt smelling and or contains metal materials it getting time for a rebuild or replacement,
. at that price the previous owner might of known the transmission was going south.
good luck and hope you get more miles out of it.

2001 V70 add around 40mphr it shakes and shudders.

It may be your torque converter, or you may need a simple fluid change. Make sure they use the EXACT fluid as mentioned in your owners manual. get the fluid changed first, as replacing the torque converter can cost a couple thousand dollars.

2000 Volvo V70 (B5244S) - what transmission service/fluid needed

Do you have an Automatic tranny With 4 speed (AW4), or an Automatic With 5 speed (AW5) With a "Flush & Change" there is no reason to drop pan and change filter...the flush and change does it without removing any parts. I would stick with your "in-town guy"!

1998 Volvo V70 with potential transmission problems?

Yes, it's the 'pnp' switch (also known as the inhibitor switch) which is on the side of the transmission.

I own 2 Volvo 960s (3 litre automatics) which are similar in many respects ... and have that flashing arrow. It's a well known fault and you don't have much to worry about.

Rather than write it all here, you can read what I wrote as an ebay guide about it at http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/Volvo-960-Automatic_W0QQugidZ10000000003233806

I did put similar info on my website at http://www.glennsmart.btinternet.co.uk/volvo960.html with photos

Though the ebay guide is better ...

If you haven't got time to read it ... forget the flashing arrow and put a bit of black tape over it ... My wife's car has (192,000 miles) had that arrow flashing for 3 years. My car (100,000 miles) has had that flashing arrow since I bought it 1 year ago.

I did change the pnp on both cars ... but you also need to have the computer error reset by Volvo to have the light extinguished. Don't worry ... keep driving.

Volvo V70 xc AWD '98 - fuel filter change

Brandonlo168,

The fuel filter can be located under the carpeted cargo storage floor at the rear of the wagon. Remove the four 10mm bolts, remove the cover. You will then see a removeable plate to the right just behind the rear passenger seat. Fuel filter can be seen through hole in hole. Replaced from underneath wagon. Be sure to make sure lines are fully inserted onto filter. Check for leaks. No smoking, extinguisher handy. Note arrow on filter for correct fuel flow.
